View Full Version : Viewport : Navigation prob
Libor 04-29-2003, 12:11 PM Hi all!
I have problem when zooming my viewports:hmm: I mean zooming isnīt much precise so i canīt zoom to exact distance (close to vertex) when modelling so Im constantly looking from too long distance or behind:scream:
I think it has something to do with object scale. Is there any settings in preferences for this?? I really dont want to scale my objects (they are in reasonable size for me now, and they arent even so small that viewports should be badly navigated because of micro size of objects)
Please, help! Its really irritating and slower my workflow.
Thx in advance.

Zooming with the mousewheel or by hitting Z, then using the mouse?

hey did you use "Zoom Extents Selected". when you use it an after use "Arc Rotate" the seection keeps centered in the whole rotation. i hope answer your question.

thx guys, but I know how to zoom (best and most intuitive for zooming is Ctrl + Alt + middle mouse button).
My problem is that when modelling close up the zooming is not smoothly incremented but rather jumps in steps so I can hardly zoom to desired location:annoyed:
Anybody know how to solve it??!

Didn't mean to dumb things down, sorry.
If you're not using the scrollwheel to zoom in, then I belive I know what you're talking about. And, sorry, but as far as I know it does that because you're working in TINY TINY scales.. like über-tiny. It may not feel like it, but to MAX it is. Baring I'm right of course.
If that's the case I suggest going to the Utility panel and find the Scale World one.
I belive MAX R5 now has the grid shown in Perspective viewports to be of a size MAX considers "nice". That means whatever it is you're making should occupy the grid. I can take up a couple of grid-spaces, or all of them, but I belive Discreet intends us to try and take notice of that scale. From their point of view it's due to the newly-introduced photometric lighting and all that crap, but the grid is nontheless a useful guide to making sure you're not making your model "too small", or "too large".
At least that's how I see it.

you can also use the field-of-view tool/button (button with two lines on it with a little arc between em in the lower right corner) to zoom in a bit more. this basically acts as if you were putting a longer lens on your viewport camera, not getting any closer but just magnifying. while it's not exactly what u want, i believe it is a smoother thing to work with, ie no jumping in and out like the zoom does, so u can zoom in a bit and then use the fov tool to get a bit closer.
don't forget to turn on viewport clipping so u can get even closer without the geometry getting clipped off :)
hope that helps some
