View Full Version : Simple Ncloth field question
nymbis 02-02-2008, 05:03 AM I am trying to attach an air field to a piece of cloth to have it blow in the wind... I can't seem to get it to work. Do you need to select the model first then the field? or select the ncloth node? Oi...

The Air field needs to be on the ncloth node, so just go to window > relastionship editor > Dynamic Relationship > select the air field and then the nCloth node related to the object.
To get the field to work you need to make the fields attenuation to 0 and magnitude to something high, 50 and up. But this is on Maya 8.5, so 8.5.1 could be different and so could Maya 2008.

Thanks workin now! Trying to figure out how to make some air blow a cape around for a nice shot. Know of a tutorial for doing as such or any suggestions?
Thanks again

Well its all about, mass, lift, drag and the wind settings on the nucleus to get nice movement.
(This was taken right form the maya help docs)
Air density controls how thick the air is or atmosphere, so low density is thick humid while a high density is simular to dry air. Note if you put the air density to 0.00 lift and drag don't work.
So once you have the air density set, put your mass to what you think the cloth mass is.
Example Mass of 0.0 is like silk, mass of 1.0 is like felt.
For a nice cloth like motion set the lift to a value that looks good to you lets say 1.590
Then for the drag I would set it just under the lift like .987 or so. having just a little less drag then lift usually gives a nice realistic cloth motion.
But you should really look a the Maya help docs they can tell you every thing you need to know about how attributes work in maya.

When in doubt read the book. :) I thank you again for your help and I will do just that.

For good blowing effects use the wind on the nucleus node instead of a wind field. Currently the maya fields do not understand the notion of surface orientation... they treat everything as particles. The internal wind on the nucleus solver knows about the surface orientation so effects like lift and drag behave according to the surface normal. This creates much more realistic flapping effects. In general all you need for a good flapping cape or flag in nCloth is to increase the wind on the nucleus node. You can lower the mass of the cloth a bit to get it to be pushed by the wind more easily( or increase air density, or increase lift and drag ). In general I would play with the nCloth mass and the windSpeed attributes.

Wow that is working great, thanks so much Duncan!
Using the wind field was making the cape go into what ever direction the xyz cords I set to and would settle into a set shape.
Thanks again!
