Hi, I'm new here, but I would like to try this challenge, as an introduction. I'm french, so my english shouldn't be excellent. However I'll try to do my best.
I haven't done the previous challenge, so no deamon yet, sorry. I would probably have try something like Hanubis. I've seen some made this one, and it was really cool.
But, currently I'm working on a Boba Fett model. Sorry, Star Wars again. I thought it could be a good entry, because there is an interesting texture work. And for the lightning, I would like to put in in one of my favorite environment from the film: The carbon freezing chamber.
I've seen some of the best modelers are here, such as Pascal Blanchet (champion du monde), Matt Clarck, Al Wirrow... There are other excellent guy, but I don't know you yet, sorry. I hope you'll like my work.

So here is the model and texture progress:

EDIT: I remove those links which didn't work. See down for update.

I think you've done a damn fine job! I realize that you're still in the beginning stage of texturing but have noticed that there seems to be an abundance of white imperfections covering his uniform. I might suggest toning back on them a bit and adding some dark burns or blotches to really make it seem he's been doing battle. Just a suggestion. Really good model though. I'd like to see him posed if you get a chance.

Yeah you're right, but I used photos as references, and except those metalic scratches, I couldn't spot anything else.
I could add my personnal stuff, but maybe I'll leave it this way, don't know...

Here are the first biped test in Max 4. I'm really a beginner with Character Studio, so it's not excellent, the are some problems with the shouder link, and the bottom. I'll try to fix it, but I don't know if I'll get it good.

Yeah it's quiet advanced, but I started it two weeks ago (model and textures) during the holidays, so I had a lot of time on it.

I planned to used my old carbon freezing chember model as environment, here:
http://www.theforce.net/scifi3d/starwars/wip/carbonchamber(DrJones_zoo)/carbonchamber.html
But I must update it a lot because those 3 last pics in the wip are not mine. Mine stopped just before.

Wow that is a superb model :)
I justthink that your overall specular amount is WAY too high, bring it down a lot .
Otherwise, you need to add lots more very fine detail, to make it believable :)
Keep the updates coming :D

Thx for comments

Leigh: you're right, but it will be in a dark scene, so this shoudln't be a problem.

Teyon: I'll upload your dewback on scifi3d ftp. If you don't have the url, ask me. I'm also working on your ronto, and maybe I'll try the taun taun, to have fun with shag fur.

polymath: your french is ok, I understood everything. so, glad you like my models.

Thewolf: you're probably right, but I think I'll let it this way.

No update:

here is my old mesh I want to use as environment.
http://www.theforce.net/scifi3d/starwars/wip/carbonchamber(DrJones_zoo)/carbon4.jpg

not really good, uh!

so I worked on it, with afterburner plugin:

http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~DJones/CARBON1.JPG

http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~DJones/CARBON2.JPG

I think it's ok for my scene.
I chose this one because it has interesting lightning: orange light from bellow, dark blue...

Now, the scene. I didn't want to have boba fett just standing in the middle. But at the same time, I didn't want him to be include in a full action scene, where he would have been insignificant. Mustn't forget the work made on this mesh is the main idea of the challenge, so it must be kept in this scene. So I decided to add han solo in carbonite. But only in the foregroung, blured. All you can see is his hand. This way, fett is doing something: he is watching solo, saying "jabba will be happy" or something.
Then the final touch: vader in the back, because I like in the film, when vader in the darkness meets luke, and then they fight.

So here is the render:
http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~DJones/BOBA1.JPG

lighning is divided in 2 sets: one for the environment and vader, and the other for boba. Because I couldn't get the two lightned correctly at the same time. when environment was ok, boba sucked, or the opposit. So, because baba had to be corrtly lightned, I made one set which exludes boba, and another which exludes the environment, so I could get both as I wanted.

To get solo blured, I rendered the scene in multi-pass (leelloo dallas' multi-pass ;) ......... :thumbsdow yeah ok that sucked).
But the problem is I wanted to add glows to the scene, and multipass effects don't work with video post. So I added glow in photoshop. I proceded this way: I rendered a "glow" channel:
http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~DJones/bobaalpha.jpg

this pic was blured, colored in yellow-orange (and blue for the ceilling lights) and used as glow layer in photoshop, playing with fusions properties, and here is the result:

http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~DJones/BOBAFETT.JPG

and here is a link to a better compress quality version, but it's about 400 ko.
http://www.cgi.third-era.com/~DJones/bobafetthigh.jpg

Wow. You done now?

I only see two minor things I don't like...his hands look off to me, and some of the background objects could use a bevel. That's a sweet pic.

I think your render is absolutly perfect. The lighting is goregous and the PS work-around worked beutifully. The textures are sweet, they really match the original well. The rendered picture itself tells a story without any explanation or animation. I really am amazed. I looked and looked and looked some more for something to critisize and the only thing I could come up with was that I thought his hands seemed a little small. That's it...

Great job, fantastic work.

hey thx for all guys.
I've hven't been there for a few days. Cool to have such feed back. The fashion pose may looks a little bit gay (that's what has been said on other forums), but if I have time, I'll change it for a more buff pose.

Anyway, don't forget you can download this boba mesh here:
www.theforce.net/scifi3d
If someone good with character studio want to correct stuffs, he is welcome.

edit: heu Teyon, I'm having problem with your dewback mesh, I'd like to work on it a little bit more.

Boba looks a little like he's posing in a fashion show.
Maybe you can ball his fist up and put it on his hip. That may look better and it may be easier to deal with.

It might look better if he has his gun too. Maybe even like in ESB he's standing there with both hands on it.

The body and the head I think are good.

Are the shoulder pads right. They look like they're sitting a little funny.

LIke another person said I think it could use more detail. But adding detail to the background probably isn't in your plans. It's a general purpose model. Not meant for specific close-ups.

INSTEAD maybe you can post a couple of stormtroopers holding their guns with both hands , one on each side of Boba around the edge of the chamber. Add that kinda detail. It looks kinda odd with Vader just standing up there all alone. Maybe you can put Vader and the troopers all down below. See how it look composition wise. The stormtroopers at SWMA are fine. Remember Andreas used them in the DS Hallway image.

Also maybe pull Carbon Solo out just 1/2 " inch more. Maybe you could not only show just a bit more of it but tilt it so we can see his face and body a little bit. Maybe grab those polys and just for this image, pull those out from the model a bit so they are accentuated. :airguitar

yoopie.
So Yeah I'll make this pic better, I saw all your notes, but, here is my problem, I broke my TWO arms in a car accident. I still can model a bit, but I'm realy slow. I update this pic soon. As Zoo (my coach) sugested, I'll add stormtroopers. I was working on them sometime. And I'll change the pose of course.

I have to change my mind about the "detail" comment another person made too. I think it would be beneficial to not detail out and bevel the entire thing... but maybe the things that are visible. Like the claws hanging from the ceiling. That would be a good idea to detail those out since they are so visisble. and it wouldn't take alot of time.
