now I've got the raftors, a few light fixtures, and a walkway. The walkway stretches most of the length of the ceiling...

Very nice work. I love all the little details your adding. Can't wait to see it textured and lit. Don't forget drains for the floor! Maybe an extension cord or two to add some reality. I really like this kind of scene because I know how hard they are to get to look realistic. Keep us posted.

Thanks.
Yeah I've already determined that lighting will be a PITA so I've kinda been putting it off... :p
I'll get more up on here next week after I get a chance to sit down for a few hours and tweak on this.

Finally sat down and did some work with the lighting. Let me know what ya think. Let me know if anything should be changed. Or if you have any advice as how to better light this room, post up....

Looks great!! and your creating quite and ambiance with the light. Lighting isn't my forte' and I would love to learn how you approached the lighting in a scene such as this, i.e. placement and types. Thanks a lot!!!:buttrock:

no prob. For this scene, I want dark. I had originally planned on a dark blue-ish tint to the room, but after using a yellow tint, I like this one better. Here is a shot of the top, front, and right viewports where I placed the ceiling lights. Since I want dark and grungy, I decided to not make all the light fixtures have lights that work. I only have three on, and to create the light, I put an omni inside each fixture, and excluded all the other objects in the scene. Then I used a directional spot to create the effect of a large light. I set up a volumetric effect on the spot, and then copied the spot and omni to the three fixtures that I have on....

As for the back wall, I used omni's in the wall light fixtures. After adjusting the light setup, and adding a glow, that was the final product. Here's a wire of the wall and where the omni's are placed.

You rock!!:buttrock: Not too many people would put the effort into helping someone to this extent. I'm new to 3d and I've obviously have been modeling and texturing like crazy, but I could never light my scenes up just right. I'm a huge fan of environments and this helped me out alot. Thanks again. Here's a link to my badly lit living room.http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59753

4 low,
The scene is really looking great! The lighting is very well done, especially for a max scanline render. Very nice of you to post a "How I did it" as well.

I've got the Brazil renderer for 4.2.6, but not for 5. Don't suppose I could install the 4.2.6 version in 5 could I? I do like the Brazil renderer, especially the depth of field, but now since it is available in 5, I may not need Brazil. It'll be something to mess around with.
There's going to be quite a bit of camera animation in this scene, probably around 5 or 6 shots. I'm also planning on having a closeup of a moth fluttering around one of the lights. I think that would be a nice touch. I'll probably also add some particle effects like steam coming out of one of the pipes. Maybe a few sporatic drops of water too.
Rendering hasn't been too bad, it's right at a minute a frame. I was kinda surprised too....

Very nice modeling !!! It reminds me of a few levels from Metal gear Solid 2 :p
great work on the lighting!

Nice!
Way to go, very moody. You've really achieved that "I don't want to be there" mood. Looks cold, dark, and creepy.
I love the amount of detail you've put into it, but it leaves you with a tough decision: do you want to illuminate it more and reveal all of this wonderful detail, or do you want to hide some of the detail with dim lighting and preserve the mood?
I think you should try it both ways and see which appeals more to you. Better yet, you could preserve the mood AND reveal the detail at the same time. Oh oh! How about adding a little red light somewhere, bright enough to just barely illuminate the pitch black areas, while still preserving a creepy mood! (I'm coming up with these ideas as I go along here  )
Anyway, keep us posted, and how about a higher resolution render? :)

funny you mention all that. I'm actually working on a small control panel that will have a pretty red light on it.
My original plan was to make it a bright scene to show off all the bad-ass modeling that I was going to do. Then I got lazy and decided that what I had was good enough, and I could hide the rest with dim lights :p Then I kinda liked the dim lighting, so I went in and tweaked some of the modeling to look a tad bit better, and now I've got to do some work on the textures too.
I'll post more in a bit...

Here's a shot from the ground. The camera animation is going to tilt up to the ceiling. I was highly surprised after this render, and quite happy with the result. This was the first render with the lighting set up from the ground. I like it....

Added a blue light to the barrels on the ground to bring them out a bit....

Look great!!!
In the last two pics, you have to much white fog:thumbsdow . You also need some kind of warm light to make a rim light on that beam and the barrel and some on the pallets.
Make the red on that "red light" less red and more like a light by adding some white to the red.:hmm:
The whole pic need to be a mix of the first pic that was dark and the new ones with all the white fog....:)
Looks better than any enviroment that I could pull off, at this time.
Keep going and you will be front page..

Yippeeee!! :bounce: :bounce:
But seriously now, I'll get to tweaking on those volumetrics a bit to see if I can't thin em out a bit. Maybe I'll add a soft light to the palets too. I've still got the other half of the room to light, so we will just have to see what happens....

Here's another shot from up in the raftors. I lit the back wall, but I think it is still missing something. That whole back wall needs something, but I'm not quite sure. I'm open to suggestions on that...
I still haven't messed with the volumetrics, but that is my next task...

Finished!! (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63255)
So I think I'm going to call it quits on this scene. I posted it in the finished gallery if anyone wants to go check it out. Thanks for all the comments
