I'm also a newbie at rigging, but I just finished my first character rig by taking a lot of tips from this tutorial:
http://en.9jcg.com/comm_pages/blog_content-art-11.htm

It explains IKs, contraints, ect. I hope that helps =)

This http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=54&t=561644 could help you about "What all things a rigging artist should know"

For the reel I think it's the same rules as other artists, keep it short with only your very best stuff and care about how you show things... ... Unlike my demo reel, that is full of placeholders for the moment ^_^
