Hi all!
I hwould like to know in which category my character belongs.
I would like to subscribe on the gameartisans forum to enter the contest officially but I'm not quit sure about the nature/kind of my character.
He's extremly strong and can kill dozens with his weapon/staff in close combat.
He gets a lot of force out of his staff(his artifact)
and each time he hits the ground with his staff dark & lost souls appears from everywhere.
Sometimes his passage to our world is so intens, spirits appear without him wanting it.
When his weapon hits or enters inside a enemy, thousands of voices crying and the victims soul will be absorbed directly into the staff.
THe staff gets stronger and stronger each time.
SO now...
What type or sort does my character belongs to then?
Is he a WArlord, a Stalker,a Clericon,an invoker...?
Would appreciat your help please.
THx and rock n roll bb!Its war!!:D
Cheers

Hey Okmer i just read this and found some strong similarities with my own character / artifact description.
Artifact, dark souls, thousands of voices, absorbing souls, when hits the ground dark & lost souls appears from everywhere...
Here is the description for my character / artifact i did in 19.02.2008. :

I was wondering, as it's the first time I'm part of the Dominance War, if at the end, there is a huge scene done for each forum with all its finished entries, to show what the forum army looked like in the end ?

I don't think so, but that would be pretty cool.
Someone might as well make a game based on this whole idea, and include all of these characters.... hmmmmm

It's my first time entering in DW3 http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif and I was just curious when the last day is to sign up to enter.
Also I have made my weapon out of rock and wood so does that mean I automatically fall into the earth and rock element or would I be able to add other elements like fire/lava as my power for the weapon.
Sorry if I posted this thread in the wrong section because I wasn't to sure where to post it. http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/images/smilies/inocent.gifhttp://www.gameartisans.org/forums/gamered/misc/progress.gif

There is no official last day to sign up but the sooner the better and you need to be able to meet the deadline of course. You also need to show your progress so if you would post all your work close to the end of the competition you could be possibly disqualified but its up to the judges to decide if that should happen or not.
It doesnt matter what your weapon is made of but what kind of energy/magic you use.

who ever has the best final piece. while it is a community challenge, it still comes down to who made the single best piece and what forum they belong too...
http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/judges/index.php
now, IF i ran the show, i would have a single champion and i would also crown oen of the forums as a separate winner for having the most entries in the final 50... but that's just how i would do it.

According to the rules and regulations we are allowed to have one normal map and other maps, now does that mean everyting has to be on one mesh and I create a normal map for that OR can I have one for the body and one for the weapons, if YES what size does it have to be because it says that you can't break it into smaller ones...?

You can have as many meshes as you want provided all of them together (minus the pedestal) comes to 9000 tris. You can only have one of each map though, which means you'll have to be clever with your UV layouts to make sure all of your mesh unwraps fit into the single 2048x2048 texture space. If this seems confusing, please feel free to send me a private message and I can try explain it more in depth for you.

Hi there ppl :)
I have two questions:
1. Is it against the rules to post my works i'm doing for this contest on the other forums which are not involved in DWIII such as deviantArt? I didn't post anything so far but that idea crossed my mind today, that's why i'm asking.
2. i don't quite get it how and when the judges will start to judge our works and in which order? Is there any time line how should i post my works... as exaple i guess first comes the concept sheet, then modeling sheet and then the winning pose.
Thanks in advance :)

You just need to send all your images before the deadline ends
(right now it says Time Remaining:36.2.43.14) if you post some of them earlier or not is up to you. I guess most people will post all of theirs images right before the deadline, it makes sence because you never know when you want to do some changes and once you post them you can't edit them or change them anymore.
rules for judging are here
http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/judges/index.php
when you scroll down there is judging system described here
hmm but I think there may be some problems with that point system as was noted by modeling_man on GA
Also the final judging seems skewed.
If an entry scores 10th place nine times and gets one 1st place they get a score of 19.
Yet if another entry scores 6th place nine times and gets one 2nd place they get a score of 16?!
Or worse yet:
Entry #1:
1 1 1 1 1 1 5 3 6 6 = 69
Entry #2:
2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 = 70
Entry #3:
3 3 3 3 3 3 1 1 1 1 = 70
So the person that scored 1st place the most winds up in 3rd place while the entry that never scored 1st place and the other entry that scored a couple 1st places and mainly scored 3rd duke it out for the top 2 positions.
This seems strange to me.

I have a question about the topic restrictions. The rules state: "No robots, metal constructs, magical golums, cyborgs, steam engines, steam equipment or anything with electronics."
One of my concepts would have armour that I consider to be modern-type metal pieces, like scrap metal siding and what could best be described as 'machinery casing parts', like a panel from a rusted car door or a duct-fan frame, for example. These parts, in my concept, are essentially landfill components and therefore are not made for or by any kind of scenitifc process in the current topic's timeframe, but are leftovers from hundreds of years previous and are a by-product of the character's environment.
Is this allowed?

I read that part of the rules and wondered the same thing. It is not worded very well, but I believe you can use metal objects as long as they are not electrically powered/machinery - being used as such.
Since most of the characters being made have some sort of metal armor, including mine, if the judges consider them "metal constructs" a lot of people would be screwed.

just becuase something is made up metal, doesn't make it digital. they just don't want everyone making robots.

Hi all, I'm very happy with this war. I have 2 litle questions.
1 - If I have 2 objects (character and weapon) I must have 2 textures, of course I can use 2048x2048 for character and a 1024x1024 for weapon right? Or do I have to atach the 2 objetcs making one? I saw in exemples that the people have 2 textures (weapon and character) separate.
2 - Can I use a high poly model with good shader effects in the beauty shoot?
Thank you.

2 - Can I use a high poly model with good shader effects in the beauty shoot?
Thank you.1. Here's a quote direct from the brief:
1 x 2048 Color Map
*1 x 2048 Reflection Map
*1 x 2048 Specular Map
*1 x 2048 Specular Color Map
*1 x 2048 Normal Map
*1 x 2048 Bump Map
*1 x 2048 Opacity(transparency) Map
*1 x 2048 Glow map
*1 x 2048 Glossiness map
http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/images/spacing.gif
*Optional
http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/images/spacing.gif
Important - You can not break your 2048 sheets into smaller sheets. So basically, you must use the same texture map for everything. When you unwrap, you'll be putting your character and any weapons or equipment on the same UV map.
2. I'm not so sure about this one, but I doubt you'll be allowed to use your high-poly model for the beauty render. Using the high-poly kind of defeats the purpose of it being a game art challenge anyway.

Insignia and Colors:
Your character must possess your team's colors and/or your team's insignia (if your team has one). If you don't have the colors or the insignia located somewhere on your character, your entry will not make it into the top 50. Please represent your team properly. I feel really stupid asking this question because it seems like it should be a no-brainer, but I just want to be safe: Under SubmissionGuidelines, it says that sheets have to be "Dimensions: 1000w x 1000h pixels - 350k file size." Now it doesn't say "Dimensions up to 1000wx1000h," but I can't think of why that wouldn't be what they mean. What would be the harm in letting someone enter a 1000x750 model sheet, for example? But I wanted to check because according to the "letter of the law," they wouldn't accept rectangular entries and I don't wnat to get dinged for that. Silly, I know, but they said 1000x1000 and I just wanted to check.

1.Got a noobish question about REFLECT MAP
Is it:
a) black&white map controling which parts of your model's texture are and which arent reflecting (similar to specular map )
b) environment map
If a) then what will be reflected?
If some kind of environmental map then what is the resolution limit of it (for example the default enviro map in Xnormal is something like 512x3072 cubemap)
If b) then how am i control which parts of texture are reflecting that enviro map ( by specular map?)
2. And second question is about 3d WINNING POSE
If I want to make it in 3dsmax does it have to be screenshot from realtime viewport
or can it be just scanline render with 3 omni light and simple shadows?
I have no idea how to get realtime shadows ,opacity , normals & bump, specular & glossiness, and reflectmap in 3dsmax.

Wow, I have the exact same question as fadingray, in the post before this one.
How can one set up a reflection map in 3DMax so that it's viewable in the viewport? If this is hard, what is a good program to use to display our final models if we want to use reflection maps?
Thank you in advance. Please hurry, time's running out :(

walrus needs a question answered! And frankly, I wanna know the same! :)
If you ask me, I think it would be legitimate to just fill the unused space with black and just save it as a square 1000x1000 image, but I wanna be on the safe side...

04-04-2008, 11:51 AM
Just a silly question maybe, doubt the judges would care. But the reflectionmap in xnormal MUST be 1:6 in proportions, which means it would break the rules. Hardly anything to care about?
edit: If everything is supposed to be made by me only, does that mean its not possible to use a lightprobe from the internet for the reflection..?
Also another question..
Background must be a textured flat image or a pure or gradiant color
Does that mean only gradient or SINGLE color backgrounds are allowed? Or could I do something like this: http://www.gameartisans.org/dominancewar/wallpapers/2/wall_mop_1024.jpg
How far does "Textured flat" go?

I have a couple of questions - for our submitted renders are we allowed to use render effects built into 3ds max such as the blur effect? (to create a lighting bloom effect) And are we allowed to integrate our maps into more complex materials? (falloff, gradient ramps, noise, etc)
If someone could reply soon that would be helpful since the deadline is upon us! Thanks

hakanpersson - single color, gradient, or a simple texture-like background [like the one you linked to] are ok.
Imagolith - in all the rules and regulations, topic (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/rules/index.php#topic), and even in the storyline (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/rules/index.php#storyline), it refers to a single 'character'. so i would guess 1 character.
calyx - i read this as 1000x1000 being the largest picture you can submit. anything smaller and in any other aspect should be fine.
molynext - for your Beauty Shot (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/submissions/index.php#3dguidelines), anything goes [so go crazy]. but, i wouldn't go changing up to much... you would want your submissions to look the same across the board.

I am confused about the how much time we have left too. If it's supposed to end at 11:59 pm eastern time (US/Canada), that means I have about 21 hours left. However, the countdown timer on my personal entry page @gameartisan says that I have about 9 hours left :S.
Can someone please clarify this?

Can someone please clarify this? It's probably counting the time until it's 11:59 pm in your timezone. That was a big problem at the start of the competition and people were confused because it didn't compensate for their time. Try changing to the time on your computer and see what it says. If the countdown changes, then you shouldn't have to worry too much.

That means we actually have about +- 20 hours left? (from the time I post this message) If so, thats a big relief...

so we submit our 1k images (or smaller I assume) in our character thread only? or is there some other place we need to submit the final images as well?
edit: I seem to remember there being a submissions page on game artisans or something, but for the life of me I cannot find it.

the best thing to do is not to go by the countdown on the webpage [since it could be countung down in some other timezone, or from your ISP's, our your PC's clock...who knows]. find out what time in your timezone (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html) is the same as April 12th [saturday] 11:59 p.m US & Canada Eastern Time and go from that.

Hey guys,
I have a really quick question... for the winning pose it says that the background must be a textured flat image or a pure or gradiant color. So what exactly are they saying? Only one colour? Or can we have a border with a flat texture and a background with a colour but maybe like a pattern or a design? Also can we have our team logo on the background??
Please the sooner answered the better I would really really appreciate this, because as all of us know it's due today! Please guys a little help!!
Thanks in advance!!!

Rezeroth - did you make sure to hit the "submit now" button on the submission page? It was really tiny and hard to see - I know of a few people that didn't see it at all and therefore didn't actually submit their work, even thought it was complete and uploaded.... Hopefully they'll make the button bigger or more noticeable next year!

Here's what's on the DW3 main page atm.
"The Final Stage of judging is now in progress...
If your name appears on the 3D or Concept Art list below,
your entry did not make it into the top 50."
3D Art Cuts (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/announcement/3d-list.html)http://www.gameartisans.org/dominancewar/images/spacing.gif2D Art Cuts (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/announcement/2d-list.html)
The problem is, both links take you to the entire list of entries for each category. In other words, no one will win. Ha ha :scream:

It seems that the page has been updated, as the 3D list is under 400 long and there were over 400 entries on the 3D side. I'm one of them, unfortunately:shrug:. So, here's to better luck next year :D.

For the 21th > 50th places, feel a bit sorry, we just finish up in some kind a alphabetic list, although it isn't important anymore to know if you're N°27, 38 or 45 if you ain't got no "why" or feedback to learn from.

at last the results Congratulations to everyone, :applause: I think we did a great job out there, next year we will win for sure, I am going to practice a lot to improve my skills to make a better performance next year, my weak spot is perspective put the characters on extreme poses so if anyone can recommend me a book or something would be nice :D .
anyway the only thing that bother's me is that I was waiting to see in what place I ended up but after 20th place they just put you on an alphabetic list, I didn't care if I was 50th place, I just wanted to know.

My congrats to all who win and in TOP, and especialy proud for CGSociety Top artists.
But i dont like final decision, i dont like organisation of judjment vs requirements in 2D section.
I have talk with Fred regarding winning pose before start doing it, and in rules and he has told me that character should be in full height and main that all should be good viewable like his artefact and other features, but it looks like judges was judge using another principle, because looking at winner i see that there more illustration-paint like effect then character presentation. But its my IMHO and may be i was wrong understand rules:) Actually i was support Walrus and hoping he will be winner:) But hes in TOP and i'm glad for him!

Yea I agree I think the judging was sub par, No offence to the 3d 8th and 9th place jobs but they shouldn’t be there how the hell are they supposed to defeat hole armies not to mention a few of the other top 50. I mean its what ever but I totally think that a few of the top 50 jobs are pretty lame and looking at some of the jobs that got cut I am very disappointed with some of the final judging. I say this not out of frustration that I was not in the top 50 but out of a over all outlook that the competition was a game art and design job based on a story line and I just think a bout 5 or 6 of the final top 50 fail to meet that story lines criteria.

I agree with you. Looking at some of the judges top 10 picks for 3D, it makes you wonder what the hell were they thinking... or judging on. A few of the finalists should not be there. I'm not saying that they were horrible, or I can do better, but comparing them to other entries, they should not be in the top 20, or in the judges top 10. I think some of the judges forgot about the rules and decided on picking which characters they liked best.

I felt too worried to say anything, but since other people have said what I was thinking, I felt the same too. In general everything is cool, but there are definitely top 20 entries I think that are not as good as entries in the 30-50 section, either in terms of requirements or originality/interest in the design (I don't mean technique, all the artists have great technique. Oh well, disappointing, but it was still fun to enter and well done to all. Hopefully it will be organised better next year.
