kevin3d 04-28-2003, 06:16 PM Is there any way for C4D to read DWG files?

A recent version of Illustrator will open a acad dwg file no problem - then re-save as an eps.. thats my work around! If you havent got Illustrator, I can convert the file to an eps if you need it?

AutoCAD can export to EPS anyway. what would really be good is if you could export autocad Splines into c4d.
You can also Export 3d .dwg models into 3ds too if you want.
But short awnser is No, C4D cant actuly open dwgs files. you would have to converte them.
my dream would be a CAD feature in C4D.
Imean i love designing in autoCad for 2d. But 3d it just really sux. not to mention the frustration of geting it to render the way you want it.
Have you got a PC?
If yes you will find a converter on the R8 Goodies CD. It's Commandline only, but it should work.

I use AutoCad and if you have Illustrator 8 or higher, open the DWG in Illustrator and save it as an -AI- file version 8 or lower. This has been my work around, but it sounds like the converter (which I'm going to find now) should work best...

Thanks for all of the great responses, folks!
I don't have Illustrator (have freehand which does not open dwg), but tried a DWG<->DXF converter I found @ http://www.autodwg.com/DWG_DXF_Converter/.
Looks like the cheapest solution is the util on the R8 goodies CD. We still have R7 but hope to have R8 soon.
Thanks again!!

If you are on the PC another solution might be a programme called INTELLICAD LIGHT. This is a free (or it was free last time I downloaded a copy ;) poor-man's AutoCAD. A web search should find it.

Looks like IntelliCAD has gone the way of the Capitalists ;)
...but not to be beaten: this _is_ free (except for some more spam in your mailbox I guess), PC needed...

Scroll down to TurboCAD LE
It looks better than IntelliCAD - I/O: DWG, DXF, 3DS, EPS... and others
Enjoy!
