I was given DWG files from auto-cad to make an architectural walkthrough. I don't know what to do with them.

Is there some way to take these DWG files and make a 3DS mesh out of them? I know I can extrude them, but I'm just guessing at the height.

Thanks

>dwg files can be brought right into max and extruded without much effort,, MAX reads them perfectly. all you need to know is the scale the cad file was made in and that scale will come over into MAX also. if your cad files lack any dimensioning I always look at door widths and from there the rest of that dims can be fudged,, but really if you are doing this job you really should get the dims, it will save time.

I'm interested in what you end up doing. I'm doing a architectural viz scene and only have access to the blueprints. I spent several hours scanning before even getting started. I used the elevation plans as a guide to my z-axis stuff. I made planes in 3ds max and mapped the drawings onto the planes and then validated their size with the tape measure helper. Make sure your doors and windows are the right size. Remember that it doesn't have to be exact - it's an artistic representation.

Even though you'll import the files you may have to remodel some of the cad stuff to make it optimal for 3d.

There are industry standards that you may wanna learn if you wanna do this stuff. For example most doorways in the U.S are 36" wide etc....

If not, you could download the DWG viewer from Autodesk called VoloView. I don't remember if it has dimensioning tools, but it could help in a few cases.

Good Luck all:thumbsup:
