CGTalk - Trip Sketching

Hi everyone.

I think before anything i need to introduce myself ...
My name is Filipe Laurentino, i'm from Brazil and i'm starting to learn what the CG world can provide to our work.
Lately i have been a little obsessed in improving my work .... cause about 2 years ago i discovered a tablet and i just loved it =)
And then i discovered that i have to improve a lot my raw drawing .... my pencil lines ... my creativity .... and a lot of other things
anyway .... i had to make this introduction because i wanted to explain what i tried to do here.

I made this trip on my vacation ..... i went to Bolivia and Peru, and i took a sketchbook along with me. The main idea of doing this was to improve my drawings ... my perception ... but also to try to catch another culture.
I mainly tried to draw people in different places ... but i couldn't draw everything i wanted.
So i'll try to paint something that i couldn't draw, based on the pictures i took there.

I want to say another thing before post the drawings!
I've never made a trip like this before .... to other countries .... and it is just amazing!
it's a huge experience! ... anywhere you go, you can feel this!
When you travel to another country, you are in touch with a different culture, a different way of life, differents thoughts ..... and you grow a lot with this.
and the places i visited were touristic places .... so, people from the whole world were there..... and even if you don't talk with anybody .... you are surrounded with this great energy.
I recommend to everybody try an experience like this.

The fisrt one was my first try .... and i failed cause this drawing looks like more with me than some guy in Bolivia ^^
The second one it's another failed try ^^ .... but later i'll find a better way to draw =)

These are very well done!

Your lines are strong, not "sketchy" strokes of indecisiveness. I like the second man of the first image the best. You captured a personality with a minimum of strokes.
But they are all very enjoyable to look at. Good for you in using the opportunity of the journey to capture moments with your sketchbook!

this quick painting represents the Potosi mountain seen from La Paz.
you can see it from the city .... it is very beautiful.
i made this image based on a picture a took.

this guy is a tourist i saw in a restaurant in Cuzco.
it was funny ..... he ordered his food without saying a single word .... he just pointed to the pictures on the wall.

this little girl was surrouded by pigeons .... i found it interesting and different!
after a while ... i realized that this is absolute normal in Peru .... i saw a lot of kids playing with pigeons on the street.
i painted this image because the lines were very weak.

this is a typical woman from Peru and Bolivia ... you find A LOT of them there.
they are called "cholas" .... and they work with everything .... but most of them ask for money on the street or sell typical things from the country.

this guy left the square before i had finished him .... so i made the last lines by my mind.
and again ..... very weak lines, soo ... i painted it.

Are you going to trip on cartoon style? something like cartoon illustration? If so, pls try complete one of them with full colour, because it looks unfinish for me. I know it is the wip thread, but it a bit hard for us to give some feedback.

Geckomilo - the idea was just to try to draw in real time ... and see how i feel in that moment. I didn't think in style or anything .... i just wanted to catch what i was living there. And i don't have plans to finish right now .... i want to show what i made during the trip ..... i just want to do some quick paintings to show what i couldn't catch at the moment.
about feedback .... i just wanted to know how my raw lines are going ..... how i can solve moments ,expressions, feelings, or people traces in few lines ... or in fast drawings.

Hey pal! I see you added more sketches since last time, and they're good! I like the little kid with the birds a lot, you could do a great picture out of that sketch, very naturalistic and appealing.

The caricatures are great too, even if you can have the model in front you can always use other pictures as refence to add color to them.
Keep on buddy, glad you're making the most of your trip!

I would like to see something finished.Then you are looking in the wrong place...This is the Works In Progress, Critique section. While any of these can be further worked on into a Finished Work, they are just fine as they are.

Keep posting, Laurentino, they are all good!

Hi everyone!

I have another one!
I have to say ... this is a drawing that i didn't make there .... but i really wanted to.
i don't know why but i couldn't .... or i didn't have the opportunity .... or i'm too shy to stop in front of these typical people to draw .... i don't know.

She is a "cholita" .... remember "chola"??? .... Cholita is a single one.... a young one!
While Cholas have big Llamas pulled like dogs by a collar, Cholitas have baby Llamas like this.

Reasons for this drawing.
i really like this scene ..... it's a very typical scene from Peru.
and i'll practice painting in photoshop ..... since i didn't draw as a sketch, i'll take this scene to make a digital training of painting and a studying of everything i can: colors, lighting, brushs technics, etc.
i'll post every step i make..... i'll probably take a while to finish it, but i will.

This guy is from the bus station in Cuzco!
I was waiting for my friends to exchange money and the place was very crowded, so i took the chance to draw! But i didn't have too much time ... this guy was the only one i could sketch!

This is a "chola", a small one ^^
She was sitting on a square from Ollantaytambo, a small town which has beautiful ruins!

Long time i don't post here.

Last year, the same day i was leaving my home to begin this wonderful trip.
This year i can't go anywhere, so i'll remember that trip with the last sequence of drawings i have.

This post is dedicated to Nazca, where i spent some time drawing on the main square.
It was funny, a lot o kids came to me to see what i was doing and to guess who were those people in my sketchbook.
