Title: DINOSAUR
Name: Damir G. Martin
Country: Croatia
Software: Photoshop, ZBrush

It could easily be a tiger of late Cretaceous, Carnotaurus Sastrei.

Evaporation of humidity and the rain that fell on it's back is caused by the body heath.
Big prehistoric forest areas have very unstable weather, and are constantly watered.

I don't like to think of dinosaurs as cold blooded, slowly moving excuses for living beings, instead, In my mind, they are agile, fast, active warmblooded animals.

Such is this Carnotaurus, who stopped briefly to listen around, before moving on trough thick vegetation of this prehistoric jungle.

Image composited out of few photographs , Zbrush model and some paint-over job.

Recent model in another composition.
Hope you like it.
C&C welcomed.

As I promised, in the mean time, here you can see the WIP.
Hope you will find it usefull.

I had hard time choosing the right color for Carnotaurus.
I was also considering adding more creatures to the image, you know, the ones you can't pick off instantly, but ended up with just few drawn flying crits in the BG.

Thx for kind comments guys.

HERE IS THE WIP I'VE PROMISED.

I'm very happy for you! Hitting front page on a site of 300 thousand members is no easy task (close to impossible). As well, your dino is certainly worthy of the honor. I do think you have a Carnotaurus fetish however... :)

Very nicely done. Those scales must've taken forever! Did you look at references of the carnotaurus skin impressions they've found, or did you just do it all freehand?

One little crit, though:

From pictures I've seen of carnotaurus skeletons, they seem to have a fairly boxy, inflexible torso. It looks kind of awkward (at least to me) to have it bending right near the hips like that—it almost looks like it has a broken spine.

Other than that, very nice work. It's nice to see a dinosaur on here that doesn't look like it just has very wrinkled skin.

SuperMax
01-29-2008, 10:08 PM
at the risk of having no life myself, id agree that the arms are too short and that its anatomically incorrect, as the front is top heavy and i dont think it would balance all that well.

Great artwork by the way. Take peoples critique of the anatomy as a compliment. They find no fault in the artistic side of things, so they then picture this animal to be real and see if it can exist in reality. Good artwork like this one makes it easier.

Again, awesome work. Love 3d dinosaurs

JackZhang_thx.

Swizzle_thx man,,, For the body, It could look like he is suffering a little, I think you could be right, from this angle it might look too bent, but I think from another it doesn't look that much, but I'l post different pows, so it could be more clearer.THX for good observation.

Alpha-Leader_after spending so much time thinking about this dinosaur, in past, and present, I got used to his unnaturaly short front limbs. But I see your point aswell, I've been there.

DaddyMack_my old friend Rob,, hehhehe, I admit, I've anoyed my friends lately, for not being to social. THX for kind comment Robert.

Supermax_thx for critique and nice comments, I am gratefull for crit aswell.
As for the arms, I dont claim them to be perfectly accurate, because they miss fourth finger :D
but I think they are relatively correct considering the lenght/shortnes of the arms.
Check this link, http://www.dinocasts.com/images/products/Carnotaurus%20skeleton%20cast%20replica%20(2).JPG

aesis412_ hey man,, wow, thx for your time, this is enthralling for me now, honestly, and every comment is a fuel up for my project GIGANTEA, I've been working on.

They weren't cold blooded they were polkilotherms and that doesn't mean that they are slow and not agile. They just had to use other stratagies besides internal heat generation to maintain their body temperature and cellular function.

Great image by the way, I love how realistic yet stylized it looks. The attention to detail on the ear looks great.

"Dinosaur attack on Sljeme":)

Qualize_Hi, thx man, teeth vary, from species to species, this one could have bigger, but I liked small ones turned out,It's subjectiveness, they dont look so dangerous, yet, if you imagine the bite from such jaw, I guess they would cut flash right off, Also, Carnotaur was middle weight champ, He probably didn't hunt bigger then it's size. But theese are all guesses.

Blaschke_thx, dont mention it. If it helps understand how to get good result, it met it's purpose .

vasishtr_As I look at the image, I see now that there are few things that could have been better.Thx for input man, and if you'd like to make a Dino, Im happy I've managed to pass some of "passion" for dinosaurs to other, it's rewarding to me, thank you.

SONIC-X_thank you to for showing interest, that makes me wanna do more, I guess we are in a circle of some sort:).

wreath_thank you.

MrPositive_Hi friend.
Ok, for the matCaps, you might wanna visit: MATCAPS (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=46175&highlight=matcaps)
Also, you can try they'r search engine, to find some more info,
But in short, Matcap is feature in Zbrush that allows users to create custom based shaders built upon image.expl. if you have chess figure photo, and you want to apply exactly same material property's to your chess figure built in zbrush, you will use MaterialCapture tool on that photo to get it done.I guess I gave atleest halfway correct definition.

So to answer your question, Half of the job was done in zbrush, that would be those 5 matcaps, that gave somewhat base color, and other, paintover, blend, texture ,final color determination, was done in photoshop.

M-4_Hvala stari. U ovom slučaju nisam koristio mape niti uw texturu, koju model inače ima, a koje su 4098 px sa 4098 px velike.

Yes this is fantastic!

Excellent choice of colors.
Lends realism via adaptation of the organism.
The decision to flip the image was the icing on the cake.
It doesn't look right otherwise.

I too dislike the idea of these amazing creatures being cold blooded barely autonomous relics.
