for home users, I would recommend the software video editing package from Pinnacle.

But if u want more flexibility, I would use Adobe Premier in conjunction with Adobe After Effects. I'm not familiar with what high end users work with.

we use adobe premier here in the office. i recently decked my girlfriend out with a sony TRV-22E so she could take movies of her 2 year old, and she uses a combination of premier and ulead studio. ulead is nice for beginners, but limited.
