Visual Studio 2005, SP1 compiler is used to build Maya 2008 on Windows. Using this compiler will guarantee binary compatibility when building plug-ins.

I`m using visual studio 2008 for a rather complex plug-in project and it works without any noticable flaws for me.

If you're in the US and have the chance to attend one of the Heroes Happen Here launch events, you can attend and see if VS 2008 is a good move for you. There'll be plenty of experts on hand to field any questions, plus you get a free promotional version of Visual Studio 2008 for attending, so that might help you figure it out too.
