View Full Version : Texture/Light/Render - character - SeanW
SeanW 04-16-2002, 04:19 AM Heres a concept for the character im going to do. Hes made up of rock, kinda like the Thing. I thought the rocky texture would pose some interesting challenges. The model should be done in a a week or so depending on how finals at school treat me.

How he is able to move his body parts can be left to the imagination :)

YouJiveAssTurkeyMayne! Yeah, the rockman is all about displacement maps, its gonna be crucial.

Mesh update:
I'm almost done eveything is blocked in. Still deciding if Im gonig to mess with displacement maps yet.

Ok it took me long enough to update. I just finished setting up his UV's heres a wire of my setup... Now I can get on with the fun stuff.

This was to get an idea of what it might look like, its comming out fairly well so far, just blocking in the rocks, later I'll break it up so its not so symmetrical, then I'll add the texture.

yo yo yo
hey sean I still think that the head is way to small on the uv's.
Scrunch that stuff together more, I think you got a lot of space there. Then just use all that space on the head.
Michael Poole
04-26-2002, 06:19 AM
oh yeah........what happened to those crazy poses you used to do? The HANDS especially!!! Its all about the pose man.

lookin' good so far, can't wait to see more. :buttrock:
SeanW
04-26-2002, 06:23 AM
heh well I'm not too too worried about the head size since I'm going to make the map big. I'm kinda cheating in that regard since im not limited to any game spects but not having that constraint makes me very happy. As far as the poses go, I'm sure I have some type of comic book pose up my sleave.
Michael Poole
04-26-2002, 06:31 AM
you make up your mind on displacement maps yet?
I say you should go for it.
I wonder whether they consider displacement maps as part of the texturing challenge or not. I wouldn't think they would consider it modeling but who knows?

Ok heres a update, still in the blocking phase, I really really wanna move in on all the little details but I must hold myself back. Heres where I am so far....

yeah thats a good question about d maps, I have no clue. I might try it for fun and see what it will look like. I'll make sure to post my attempt if I try..
Michael Poole
04-26-2002, 08:42 AM
lookin good, startin to see it come together.
maybe work on it not being so symmetrical.
rv-el
04-26-2002, 10:19 AM
tight.. most things i would say are probably to come lateron anyways. ah... maybe his fingers should taper a little more as they go out to the end. can't really tell in that render though. his proportions kick ass, length of arms, shtuff like that. I think my main thing would be the way he's a bit monocromatic. my guys jacket was originally black leather, but its all wierd and green and i like it alot better that way. i dunno, i mean he is rock, but it might be cool. moss may be :) hehe. some dirt in the cracks and bumps. the rock layout itself is definitely on target.

Kickass character you have there :buttrock:
About displacement maps: since this is a lighting/texturing challenge, there's no reason you wouldn't be allowed to use them. They modify geometry, and this challenge isn't about that. So get displacing! :bounce:
really cool character ,but make him smilig like on the first sketch !!!

timothyD-
Ok this whole displacement mapping scares me, been playing with it and I'm not getting good resuslts because my comp dies when I try to up the polys on my mesh so I can displace it. So It looks like I'm just going to paint everything.
Gabe-
In the back of my mind I agree with you but then theres this little demon on my shoulder saying "screw the smile you already modeled it with him looking p'd off" When I get done I'll see if I cant do a smilling version
ZrO-1-
haha yeah I should make a bubble of him saying that.

04-28-2002, 08:09 AM
Ok I think this is going twards where I like, I'm going to push it a lot more though. Add moss and other things that tend to grow on rocks. Maybe a moss tattoo? hmmmmm..

Ok there have been reasons that you havent been able to see below his waist line.. Its not done yet but I think this is what you all have been waiting for. I just had to give him some adidas. :buttrock:

04-28-2002, 08:25 AM
hehe, he's lookin good.
The bump and everything looks nice, although since the polycount is still pretty low there are some obvious facets that look strange in conjunction with heavy bump. About displacement....I just went through the same predicament. I forget if you mentioned what program you are using, but MAX has a modifier called Displace Approx. If you put that on the mesh then it subdivides it especially for you displacement map, so it only really adds geometry that is necessary. However that still can be a load on your computer. Anyway, if you are using MAX you could try that, and if you are using something else maybe they have a similar action.
Also, are you still planning on breaking up the symmetry of the texture? I think that would make him look even better. But he already kicks ass. :buttrock:
SeanW
04-28-2002, 08:37 AM
Gilgamesh thats awesome information. I'll try it out and see if this old thing can handle it. Its on its last leg, but I have much faith in my puter.. And yes I plan on breaking everything up, I just got so excited to put the texture on I skipped that part.

Small update, got the pants in. Everything is pretty much set, I just need to go in and tweek and detail. I might change the rock texture, its a little too much for me, too buisy I'm thinking. I'm really open to suggestions at this point.

looks like the rock texture is coming along. Are those holes in his pants? If not then you need to add some texture there because they look like holes now.
SeanW
05-02-2002, 03:33 AM
Small update, added a flame pattern to the bottom of his pants, thinking about getting rid of the white adidas, might try another color. Also trying to push his rock color with warms and cools.

Like this character. Realy cool concept, reminds me of the THING from Fantastic Four.
Great progression. Think you need some lighting in your renders, that way you can get the full idea or rock with the bump maps and stuff.
Legs legs legs! The pants have come along way, keep up the work. Legs should be just as musclie as his upper body.
LOVE THE SMILE! Keep IT. :D
Shoes are looking awsome.
can't wait to see how this ends up.
Ps. is this low poly model?

05-03-2002, 07:17 AM
YES! the smile is full on attitude. Thats awesome. The texture looks really really good now. Looks tight. i guess you could say he ROCKS.. heh.. all about the blue shadows. Guy looks alot better every time i see em. Only critique i can think of is his knee pads seem to look a little low on the pants.
SeanW
05-03-2002, 01:29 PM
Well I've just been cracking away at the texture, tweeking, changeing colors. Thought I would spend a little time with the lights this time.

Hey there - what a cool character! :applause: He looks like he belongs in the next Tekken game :) The only crit I really have at this point is that the rocks are possible a bit shiny... you should take down your gloss setting a bit :wip:
But otherwise, he is really cool
Gilgamesh
05-03-2002, 10:16 PM
oooh, nice gradient texture on that last one.
However, now it is kind of hard to distinguish his facial features. I must say I liked the idea behind the origional lighting, with the light coming straight down. But this guy's textures just keep getting better.

Well, its almost done, not sure what else I'm going to do. Ive kinda hit a plateau. I would love suggestions on how to make it better.
Thanks for the comments Gilgamesh, ive been trying to tweek with the lights as much as possible
Leigh- Ive been playing with the spec, let me know if its still too shiny, since ive made some of the rock white its hard to avoid. On a side not I passed a street named Leigh the other day :)

The texture is really solid, nice variation between the rock and the pants...the rock is really nice as a whole. I'd like to see the hands in a fist to see how the texture holds up, but from the view you have it looks like it needs a little tweaking...the texture's causing the fingers to get a bit lost in one another, just somethign to think about. As always (you stud) your torso musculature is spot on and excellently textured, at least it appears so from the front :).
Real nice relationship between the delts and the biceps. I'd like to see his back but I know that you always go apeshit with the back muscles/torso anatomy so I'm not worried about it. The forearms might be a little short or it might just be the perspective on the camera. Also the hands are large for the body but that might be an aesthetic choice on your part.
I love the shoes, definitely working really well. I also really like the idea of the pants but you might want to push the flames a bit farther...they're not quite reading at the moment. Maybe you could find some photoref on some gothy website :). Maybe some jewelry to go with the shoes? A watch perhaps? A normal-looking necklace? Just a thought.
I agree with The Shag that the knee bits look a bit too low. You could play it off as though that was just part of the style of the pants if you did some highlights higher up on the pants to denote the patella.
I also agree with Mr. Corriveau that I'd like to see at least a hint of the leg musculature...the pants are too straight and it's just not believable that there'd be legs under them. Doesn't have to be insanely cut out, just a couple contours, maybe some wrinkles in the texture. Again I'd like to see back view, specially cause I know how you love to give your characters those sexy asses.
Looks tight, every model you do gets me wetter and wetter, I mean looks better and better.
I wuv you.

As I said in a post to Shaggy, I think that what we said earlier today about our models getting better from one model to the next is backed up once again with your rock dude. I do agree with that previous post that the teeth should be seen....I don't know how much extra work that would cause you but it added so much when you threw it on that one render of him. It's looking damn fine though and i can't wait to see the final product.
 Game 5: Avs-Sharks.....if you're up on time......it starts at noon! Give me a call if you're down. Otherwise, we need to figure out a time to collect on our big Game 2 victory over the girls........and also there's always Game 6 on Monday, when, hopefully the Avs can close it out. (I suppose I coulda just said all this to you on AIM since you're online, but it gave me an excuse to use the beer smilies, which are badass)

Ok slight update with the pants....
Leigh- yeah I changed the lighting so the pants would look nice as well, but I cant really achieve anything I like so far. As for the sneakers, yeah I just though it would be funny to throw some addidas on :)
OZ-Thanks, hes geared tward game, I'll see if I cant post his map later.
Atari- Your the third one that didnt like the face, I cant seem to put my finger on why, I'll see if I cant do the smile everyone wants.
MDB101- I didnt think about a weapon untill you said something then I though some type of glowing rock sword would be cool :) Not sure I have time for that though.
Crepusculum- Great critique, I went to some goth sites and the colored fire is what I came up with. Plus I tried to add some subtle creasing and I wov you too.
element412- Ok I'll really try to do the smile, my other attempt was really really cheezy, I'll try harder this time.
Kamikazerussell- OK ok I'll do the smile

That looks great! :applause: The new lighting brings it out a lot better, esp. the blue rim. Higher res maps on the pants now as well?
Only thing I can think of is that maybe the knees or kneepads still feel low..would be nice if you could spare a few more polys, for the shoes, but since it's for game, that's more than fine. Everyone will be looking at the badass pants and torso anyway.
Kickin' otherwise. The rocks rock. Nice rounded feel to him overall. Great stuff.

05-15-2002, 09:20 AM
lighting looks nicer but there is one issue with it now, It seems to have decreased the shadows in the bump maing him look smoother than in previous renders. Maybe a subtle light at a harsh angle to help bring that roughness back or maybe something else I don't know and can't think right now but he definitely seems smoother less rough stony now.
Got whata poor crit I go to sleep now??? Okay zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

05-15-2002, 09:43 AM
I agree, the last render was to show off the pants more. Ive been trying to combine the goodlooking rock render with the pants render but im getting little success. I dont know much enough about lighting and its showing right now, I only understand the fundamentals. I'll keep at it till I get it.

05-15-2002, 11:25 AM
d'oh..color me stupid..I kind of liked the idea of smooth rock surface broken, but looking back (2?) versions before, and at the ab area, I can see what's meant, much deeper looking.
It seems to be getting a kind of edge effect where it's catching highlights. The deep/dark areas on the right side of the chest seem to be kicking up spec where they shouldn't, tho. Something is making it 'grey' in the cracks there instead of black, it flattens it out. The harsh angle light like he said sounds like the ticket, maybe you could throw in some kind of underlighting to hit the pants from the low side, and leave him hit by more harsh lights on top? Tricky stuff.
Anyway hope some of that meandering waffle made sense at all, and maybe gave ideas. I should go sleep or lurk now.

I love that smile looks great either way (I prefer the smile though.) As for his shoes looking blocky thats cause itrs a low poly model. most of it is textured and modeled so well you don't notice that it is low poly. No complaints here
