Title: Meeting of Land and Water
Name: Dan Phyillaier
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop
The inspiration for this painting started during a trip to the rocky coasts of California. After viewing the crashing waves at sunset I wanted to recapture that same feeling. This is the second painting in a series depicting the rich imaginations of children. At this age, life is a steady stream of discoveries. Anything seems possible, even meeting a magical creature during your next adventure.
Except for a pencil sketch of the mermaid, this piece was painted entirely in Photoshop. Comments are welcome.

hey dan, i love this piece!...the glow from the lantern on the children faces totally gives this piece its mythical quality:thumbsup:...as well as the light house and the lights on the bridge. i love the expression on the boy's face, especially his rosy cheeks:scream:! the contrast with the cool blues and the warm hues just does it for me:)!...brilliant, 5 stars!

Just gorgoeus work. Palette and subject-matter wise, it reminds me a lot of the work of Scott Gustafson, who is one of my favorites. And this is right up there... Great job!

I absolutely love this piece! The only thing that gives me pause is that I have seen that stretch of coast many times, and the boy seems a little casual for such a dangerous and frightening position out there on the rocks. Perhaps he should be hanging on a bit tighter. :)
But I can totally imagine the mermaid getting washed away by the next wave and the boy later trying to tell his parents what he saw wash up on the rocks!
Edit: Just noticed on your site there are prints for sale. Very seriously considering buying a large print of this image.
this is great art, I love it. Look forward to more of yr post.

Very nice work! The composition is great, the values and color temperature leading the eye right where the story wants it to go. The technique is exceptional. Great job.

Hi Dan,
Great work. This piece reminds of the old traditional illustrators from the early part of the last century...yet completely done with modern digital techniques.
The lighting is great and there's a real sense of drama in the scene.
The colours are great too. I especially like the subtle colours in the mermaids tail.
Fantastic job. I can't wait to see more.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
Is it possible to update the image in this thread? After uploading, I noticed that it is lighter then when I painted it. I thought it was just my monitor, but after looking at other monitors, this version looks a bit washed out.
What do you guys think? Does the one in this thread look better or worse then the one I just edited in my portfolio? http://flair.cgsociety.org/gallery/
Thanks again

Maybe the one in your portfolio its a little too dark. I prefer the thread version.
Anyway, I think you can update the image in "edit detail" from "manage gallery" section.

I like the one in your portfolio. I think the darker version has a more engaging sense of mystery.

Giuliano, I think your were right about the one in my portfolio being a bit too dark. So I lightened it slightly after your comment. However I still think the one in the thread is too light. I could not find how to change the thread image in the "manage gallery" "edit details" page.
Thanks, Bill, for letting me know which one you liked better.
I am working on a Mac, and it seems they display images on the web lighter then PC's do. So I was trying to hit the middle of the range so it would look good on both platforms. To me the one in my portfolio is similar to the way I painted it. I don't have access to a PC with a decently calibrated screen right now. So could someone with a PC tell me if the one in my portfolio looks really dark and over-saturated?

Yeah Dan, I know, I'm on a mac too and sometimes I used to apply a correction in PS just before exporting, only for cgtalk. U can also try to preview your jpeg in Safari BEFORE uploading in gallery. Sometimes 'export for web" from PS it's a pain in the ass :).
Anyway, in Manage Portfolio, scroll down the page, look at your uploaded image thumbnails:
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/5974/editao8.jpg
...click the "AaAa" button and upload again the image just like the first time. I'm not quite sure if u can change the main image, I don't remember, but I know for sure u can change the thumbnails, so give it a try.

Giuliano - Thanks again for your help. I found the link that you described, and was able to change the image in my portfolio. However it didn't change the one in this post. It really doesn't matter now since it was updated when it switched galleries.
Nice work. im vry interesting to know what kind of feeling during the painting on this work. c u
Rian Chen - Some of the main feelings that I wanted to express are curiosity, innocence, pleasant surprise, a sense of adventure and wonder. I painted this for my nephew Josiah, and he is a very curious and observant boy. He takes time to notice things that others are too busy to see.
seems like the boy should be drenched or at least wetter to me.
You are probably right. However I figured he would be cuter if he was dry. My "justification" for this is that it was the first large wave to hit the rock while the boy was that close to the edge. Also the mermaid is diverting the water away from the boy. A few seconds later he is going to be drenched.

The environment is so fully expressed and felt, then you toss in these delightfully rendered children for the fairy tale finish...words cannot do justice to the result.
