Hello ladiesand gents, I'm trying to get a specific effect with cloth and I'm not getting the results I want. I'm trying to turn modeled doorbeads into cloth and have them part as an object walks through. Sounds easy enough but what I am not getting is the movement between the beads, where they meet. The camera is going to be the object parting these beads so I'm pretty close up on them. Anyone have any ideas how I might achieve this look?

Thanks so much.

I would model cloth (with nCloth) as long skinny quad strips, 1 quad wide and with the vertices matching up to the bead positions. Then use the cloth a wrap deformer for your bead chains. Beads are heavy so make the mass high on the nCloth and the bend resistance zero.

Thanks so much Duncan ... beats the option I was about to try ... making the middle string cloth, each bead passive and constraining all the beads to the string. Thanks.

i immediately thought of using the bottom of each rod to be a pin constraint for the top of the below rod, with directional hinge or something similar for the beads. would be easy to implement while making the strands (mel loop to generate the chain) but, unsurprisingly, duncans suggestion seems surprior.

i'll put the constraints down to the theoretical "if i was making the same thing in maya 5" box. :)
