View Full Version : need advice on video cards....
freddy7133d 04-28-2003, 01:21 AM I sure you get a lot of threads like this...so sorry.
but I'm getting a new computer and the guy how is building it for me wants me to get a ATI 7000 ($69.00).....
he said it is nessary to get an expencive card, like a ATI 9800:buttrock: (the one I want) cuz I won't see much of a difference..when gaming and using 3dmax5....
He doesn't do any gaming or 3d...so I dont know if I can trust his opinion on that...
the computer is going to be used mainly for 3d work, but I'm also into gaming..
any advice would be great..
Thanks,:)

Um, I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. Do you mean that the guy building you comp says getting a 9800 won't bring you any preformece improvements over a 7000 :surprised . Thats BS, in gameing and everything in max but rendering, that cards going to REALLY pull your system down. I'd start to wonder about this guy if he was building a comp for me and said something like that...

Those 2 cards would each have a dramatically different impact on your frames per second in gaming as well as rendertimes and other things in CG's. If you have the money for the better of the 2 cards then the better one would be the best choice lol

As the other two said the 9800 is going to be phenomenally better in both games and Max. It is the video card that makes all the difference when it comes to games and the viewport rendering in Max (not the final rendering).
Also Nvidia cards are much better in 3d studio max than Ati's. Because of that I'm waiting for the nv35.
B.T.W what that guy said is total bs, he obviously has no idea how pc games work!

thanks guys for your advice....
I'll going with the 9800..
but now I go am other question?:surprised
and is 2 gigs of RAM overkill or more the RAM the faster the render time in 3d?
thanks again guys for your advice..

the radeon 7000 cards do not have hardware T&L (transformation and lighting) onboard. this feature is only available in the 7500 (and 7500LE) and up, and will GREATLY improve your viewport performance in your applications.
i would seriously recommend in order the following cards if you are considering putting any sort of effort into your pro 3d work:
1) nvidia quadro 750XGL
2) nvidia geforce4ti4200
3) ati radeon 9500/9600/9700/9800
i personally have had very good experiences with the quality of nvidia drivers in the past, which is why i recommend their cards above anything ati has to offer.
on the other hand the ati cards i mention above all feature DirectX9 support, which the two nvidia cards do not. you need to move to a geforceFX to gain directX9 support, but the jump in price is not worth the added feature IMHO.

cool.... thanks elvis..thats helps..
ATI are not bad cards, but it seems to me like most people lean towards nvidia...
May be should just stay with my old Gforce 2 32mb card and wait to get a FX card or just a say to heck with the gaming and go with a nvidia quadro....
does anyone know is you can still do some gaming with a quadro?
sorry if these are dum questions...I'm really in the dark when it come to hardware...

the quadro4 cards are almost identical in gaming performance to their geforce4 little brothers, which is something you wont find in other pro cards like the 3dlabs wildcats and ati fireGLs.
if you still want to play a game from time to time, but are serious about your pro 3d, quadro4 cards are the way to go. the 750XGL cards are pretty much your best bang for your buck.
the 900XGL and 980XGL are fantastic performers, and also offer the ability for dual DVI out if you are so inclined, but are alot more expensive and to me don't offer the same value for money.
