MikkoK 04-28-2003, 02:07 AM Thanks to Charlie Brown for kicking my lazy ass back to quick sketching.

Well, here's something I discovered again today. It's the first sketch of the awful Hessian guy I posted earlier. I like it better.

thanks for the thanks man, uve reminded me to get back on the sketch wagon. that first picture is superb, uve jus suggested form and texture, rough against smooth is a really good tip to make textures convincing (esp in monochrome), the metal against the hair is really nice. would be nice to see the stages of that pic, i know there were prob only a few ;) but u have clearly used the general to specific method which i am sure would benefit so many others. It is nice because its still so workable u could really render it further if u wanted. i like to be able to work a piece and be able to leave it anywhere and be ok with it, this forces to u to work the whole scene. gr8 stuff
i disagree with the need for wrinkles tho,, uve jus suggested his features and it works.

I love the first one except for the hands. I think it needs a tiny bit more detail, ince it is a stark contrast with the rest of the guy.
looking pretty good. You could stop right now and it would look finished.
As a painting I would be careful of overworking these images by
adding to much detail.
On the first image the only thing I would do next is to sharpen the outer form of the hand to define the shape a little clearer.
(not neccesarily by adding more detail). The only reason I would suggest this is because the lighting draws so much attention to the hand.
The second image looks great

Thanks for all the great replies!
Rey & Alevice:
You're probably right, the hands could use some more work in the shape defining. I wanted to keep this very spontaneous so I'm not going back to it now. I try to improve for the next one.
Charlie:
Thanx friend. Good points there as usual. My latest inspiration came from the artwork at conceptart.org which has some great talents there. Jason Manley is amazing.
With the first pic I wanted to combine strong colours with as quick painting as possible. I think I really need some heavy practise with color use. If you know any good links to color use/theory I'd like to see.
I always TRY to build my pictures as a whole, not concentrating on face or any other center of detail. But I don't like showing the stages because I don't think the method matters, only the result. I don't have any certain way of painting, I try to keep it as subconcious and simple as possible so showing the stages of a certain picture might not give a good impression of how I work. I try to post some wip stages too for my future paintings.

Thanx. I don't really know what you mean with that bright reflection. The shoulder plate of the Elder guy? Well, the only piece of advice I can give you is to draw as much as you can. Examine the best stuff like www.goodbrush.com and draw not only creatures and monsters but also from life. There's no shortcuts. I dislike people making tutorials and photoshop trick examples 'cause the real thing cannot be learned that way. Not that I can really give any advice, 'cause I'm only learning myself.
