View Full Version : modeling: poly: sharp edges
Maya Ayanami 04-28-2003, 12:13 AM Im curently doing a project and Im only on the first peice and it requires some of the edges to be sharp and not really smooth when it is smoothed out for render/animation and It is very anoying using the draw poly tool to add extra polys right next to the places were i want sharp edges.
so I was wondering if there was something I can do to make this easier.
here is a picture of what I have been doing.

not sure if this is what you're lookin' for:
select the edges you want to be sharp, then
edit polygons->normals->soften/harden

I think there is no easy way with polygons, but you can use full-crease while using subdivision surfaces.

If your using poly smooth you can adjust the continuity of the smooth so it only smooths edges of say <50 degrees.
Otherwise I dont think there is a better alternative - polys arent that smart...

thanks both of you. I will try them out tonight.
is there a continuty option for the exponential smooth type of thing or is it just for the lenear(is that spelled right) smooth setting because I always use the exponential smooth type cause I always get weird results the the other one and dont like it and it screws up the mesh.

Experimentationalising is the answer!

ok well i tried these but the only one that works is the crease for sub-d's. the continuty one makes all of the edges of the original polys sharper and therfore the final smooth model will loo similar to the lowres mesh but the edges are a little smooth and look strange.
and with the full crease subD it sharpens it too much. and the next one down wicth i believe is semi crease or something similar well that makes it too smoot so is there any way to get inbetween.
sorry for being such a pain

Try this: full crease, refine a few times, then uncrease. There is an example about this in docs.
