View Full Version : ILM Anim Supe On Transformers Nomination
unchikun 01-24-2008, 01:29 PM Everything starts with artwork, the look of the film. The designs of the characters are all defined on paper with a team of artists ahead of time. Sometimes productions will hire ILM to do the artwork ourselves, as we've got a team of talented artists.

Benza: The level of realism that the artists were able to achieve. If the audience doesn't believe that what they were seeing was real, then we have a hard time keeping them interested. So the advances in lighting and rendering are very important as well. If the characters moved in a way that immediately told the audience that something was fishy or fake about their movement, they would question it and it would take them out of it. So we paid extra special attention to make sure that the robots had a sense of weight and a believable performance when they had to act. We took what we've learned on other movies and took it to the next level.

sounds about right. ILM is top of the food chain and rightfully so. i just hope it doesnt go to their head too much like it happens with everything thats popular and good. They have an amazing bunch of people and hopefully keep it going on for more years to come.

Transformers is a seriously poor film in all aspects except for the CG effects. I realize that this is a technical Oscar but I hope it doesn't make them make a Transformers 2 in the image of the first one.
It wasn't the VFX that took me out of Transformers. Its was the garbage script and often confused camera direction/editing.

LOL! I think it went to their heads about 15 years ago with Jurassic park. ;) They've been at the top of the food chain since then. it's only been recently that they have had any kind of competition. I'd say they've done pretty well for themselves.

As far as oscars go they had quite a drought after Forrest Gump which was a year after Jurassic Park and just reclaimed it last year with Pirates DMC:

the movie, sucked, the designs of the robots didn't convey the feel of the source material nor did the robots look appealing. but the effects, as far as realism goes were very well done.
still the robots looked COOL in the cartoon in the movie they looked like jumbled messes of scrap metal.... the designers missed the mark (yes under Bay's direction) and didn't realize that the way the ROBOTS looked was really important. they changed a lot of things that really only served to bring the film down IMO.
And lets be clear, Transformers was going to be a blockbuster with or without Michael Bay.

I agree. I gotta believe that it was successful in spite of Michael Bay. The design of the robots sucked. The acting, script, and editing sucked. But the CG lighting and compositing were about the best I'd ever seen. I watched it again yesterday oddly enough, and cringed several times during the movie, due to the cheesy acting.
