I am building and object that I want to mirror and keep seperate from the original, I unchecked the merge with original box, and it still comes out as one piece. What gives? I need to have some space in between the objects, yet I can't seperate them.
How do I mirror and then seperate the object so that it's not merged together?

hmm perhaps it's the child of the original, check this in the outliner. If it is the child unparent it :)
And check in the duplicate Box whether you create
an instance or a copy.

or do you mean subD ?!

You can also just duplicate your object and use the minus scale
in the direction you wish to place your duplicate. But begore doing this youmight want to offset your original object , just a tad for that space you need and then ues the insert key to place the pivot point back to world space coordinates. If you use the mirror geometry it will then leave the space.
