View Full Version : Sketchbook Thread of jwh335
jwh335 01-24-2008, 02:00 AM Hey, I'm new to this site and I'm not sure this is the right place to post about this. But, I just got my tablet about a day ago and this is the first drawing I've done on it. It has been a while since I've had formal art classes and I know my drawing is sort of rusty. I'd appreciate critique and suggestions, a lot.

I got this picture from one of the references in the 15 minute sketch thread. This took me longer than 15 minutes though, so I figured I shouldn't post in there.
Also, is it bad practice to zoom in on the reference so that I won't be distracted by what I'm looking at and just draw the lines? I've been reading "drawing on the right side of the brain" and it seemed like zooming in would be a good idea. Keeping me away from the "symbols."
Anyways, thanks for suggestions and critique in advance!

Hello and welcome. :)
Also, is it bad practice to zoom in on the reference so that I won't be distracted by what I'm looking at and just draw the lines? I've been reading "drawing on the right side of the brain" and it seemed like zooming in would be a good idea. Keeping me away from the "symbols."
It's not a bad practice to zoom in, any more than it is a bad practice to look more closely at an image.
My main suggestion is just to do a lot of these sketches. If you would like, I am happy to move your thread to the Personal Sketchbook area of the forum, where you are likely to get more replies and feedback. :)
Cheers,
-R

I think that's a good idea, to move to the personal sketch thread. I'd appreciate it, if you moved it there :)
Thanks for suggestions.

I've begun a skull study to improve how I draw faces. They are only quick sketches so that I can get used to how the skull is built.

hand sketches. I suck at anatomy :( I've heard drawing individual pieces works well, though.

Welcome to the sketchbook forum. Maybe I'm wrong, but you might get more out of the skull studies if they weren't quick sketches? The hand on the left looks pretty good. The hand on the right though, the line from the wrist to the first thumb joint looks weird.. the width of the hand doesn't really match the wrist and arm I think. First drawing is pretty good. Hope to see more

well, I thought that if I did quick sketches my eyes would get used to having to find the detail quicker. That could be completely wrong and stupid. But, even if it is.. I still enjoy doing quick sketches :P.
I guess that when I decide to get detailed with it, it will be easier for me to get my lines right quicker.
