you'd have to write a bone exporter, to essentially take the positions, orientations etc of the bones and rebuild them in max 8.

If you have a character rigged, export it as a game model and import it into Max 8 that way. For example, if I had a rig, I'd make a sphere and skin all the Bones to the sphere and export the sphere as an MD5mesh (used in Doom 3) then bring it into Max 8 using the MD5 importer.
FBX might be of some help as well.
