how do you do this in maya. I would like to lock a selection of cv's with a quick click to allow easier construction of base models before converting them to poly. i am sure maya can do this, but i cannot find out how to.

Also is the best way to select a ring ov cv's to first select a hull, then switch to cv's from the selection menu? because with all the cv's that are in the model it is hard to select them, i figure there must also be a way that this is done.

thanks for the help

you haven't explained WHY you need to lock CVs well enough, but if you only want to effect a certain group of CVs on a model you can always apply an Animation > Deform > Create Lattice ... OR create a Quick Selection Set by first making your selection, then 'bookmark' that selection under Create > Set > Quick Selection Set... Access that selection set again under Edit > Quick Selection Sets The Selection Wizard mel script on highend3d is superior for managing lots of selction sets.

If you want to select a ring of CVs on a NURBS surface just do that in HULL component mode. If it's a poly surface you can select a ring of verts by orienting your camera properly and making the selection - while pruning off verts you don't want with Ctrl-LMB ... OR in EDGE component mode select ONE edge then hold down Ctrl-LMB and Select Contiguous Edges - again, while holding down Ctrl-LMB choose TO VERTICES.

Thanks for the quick reply

i want to be able to lock selection sets to tweak the model. it just seems easier to be able to select all the cv's for a particular isoparm, then lock the selection set, then tweak the shape, then move on to the next set of cv's for the next isoparm.

i have seen that if i go to hull mode and select a hull that all the corresponding cv's are selected, but i don't seem to them be able to lock the cv set and tweak them individually, which is what i want to do, it only allows me to move, scale, or rotate the whole hull.

the selection set thing might work, but it is not really practical since i would then have a selection set for each set of cv's belonging to each isoparm.

you can always select the hull - then move into CV mode and trim off the ones you don't want to include in your set.

Selection sets are the way to go here -- I don't think the function you describe exists within maya ... with selection wizard you can for instance make a contiguous selection - then break it up into segments and save those off as different selections, etc.

I think you're spending too much time trying to get too much control - just move the points into place like the rest of us do! :)

I just have a hard time figuring out which cv i want to tweak, seeing as they kinda seem to just dangle around. for poly modeling i don't have a problem with it due to the fact that it is easy to identify which vertex needs to be selected.

thanks for the help

have you worked at all with the sculpt surfaces tool ? It'd probably help you block out the changes you want to make without having to figure out CVs - just make sure you crank the default values (opacity and max displacement) WAY DOWN as the defaults are really strong and will pull your model apart really quick.
