Congrats to everyone!

I'm sure Transformers will win the VFX Oscar, but I'm really happy to have worked on something that got a nomination anyway. Big shout out to all my fellow TGC'ers :buttrock:

I'm in dubio... Transformers whas indeed the most impressive flick untill now if you ask me...
but the maelstrom scene in Pirates was amazingly complex and beautifull...

300 was robbed IMHO.....while technically it might not be the best, It was the most creative use of effects I have seen in some time.

Not even a art direction nomination!

Im pleased with the nominations for Best Animated Feature. Its between Preseopolis and Ratatioulle. I can see them choosing Persepolis because of it's political overtones.

Im also glad Shrek 3 didn't make the cut......

I am thrilled to see Surfs Up made it! What a different take on an animated feature. Contrats all around!

Wow no Boewulf or 300., what gives?

Transformers deserves it though. Them machines running on the Hwy and fighting was the worth the price of admission alone.

I'm very pleased to see the academy picked 2 good but unwatched animated features this year. I hate when a film gets an oscar nod just because it was popular or made a lot of money, even if it was not a good film. Persepolis was especially good, and I think it's something everyone should see. Good luck to all 3 films.

dang, ok. Transformers deserved it, but come on...beowulf deserved a best animated award, and 300 Art Direction, at least.

Those 2 movies' CG rocked hard...I thought they were much more impressive than the nominated ones in terms of artistry, although technically these are better...dunno what to say

Beowulf can't go up for Best Animated Feature because of its use of MoCap. I personally don't think it should be in there even if it could. The story and acting were flat and all it had were it's visuals, like Transformers.....The three that were chosen for best animated feature were chosen for a reason other then because it looks "cool" or did well at the box office. IMHO they chose very well.

Then go watch it. I think it deserves the Oscar for best animated Feature. It's not a big production, a simple film, telling the story of an iranian girl from youth to adultship - great flick.

I would go watch it if it was playing anywhere here. Maybe they will release it on dvd\blu ray now seeing its a sony classics movie and is nominated for an oscar.

Regarding Persepolis - I think they may have been hoping for the oscar nom to generate a bit of buzz - I'd be surprised if it doesn't get a wider release because of the nom.

Well worth seeing, a film which really tackles difficult and adult subjects, and manages some laughs as well. Style is deceptively simple, but I love the use of contrast and the graphic strength of the images. The graphic novel itself is even better, so I recommend getting hold of that if the film doesn't show up near you soon.

I'm disappointed to see that The Simpsons Movie was not nominated for Best Animated Feature, but other than that, I can't complain.

Transformers definitely deserves Best Visual Effects. As to who will actually win, however, I can't say, since Pirates and The Golden Compass are of genres that tend to hold more appeal for Academy voters.

Now the one other thing that irks me is how Sound Editing now has five nominees but Visual Effects still only has three. I mean, practically every movie these days has vfx of some sort -- I really think they should bump the number up to five.

The Simpson's, seriously?? I don't see what's so special about this movie. Don't get me wrong, I'm as big of a Simpson's fan as the next person, but this movie didn't do anything special to get an award nomination. Correct me if I wrong, but don't they usually nominate films based upon something innovative whether its story or visuals? I don't think the Simpson's broke any new ground with their theatrical release.

One way or the other i believe ILM will take VFX Oscar, question is will it be for Pirates or Transformers ? :D
For some reason i would love Pirates to win, i was also impressed with maelstrom scene.

I would definitely say Transformers. In terms of rigging and animation its a stunning tour de force - or "ILM unleashed" if you will.

Well, I figured it would be nominated because it was nominated for both the Golden Globe and BAFTA equivalent. I guess the word I should have chosen was "surprised." I agree that the movie was a bit of a letdown overall, considering Simpsons fans have waited 17+ years for a movie to be made.

I shall counter the disappointment with another:

I am disappointed that no one from Digital Domain got a nomination for Transformers (no David Prescott). Although Digital Domain's workload was smaller than ILM's, it just so happens they worked on my favorite Transformers -- the Xbox (which I wish I could've seen more of) and the Mountain Dew soda machine. Yup, I love Mountain Dew and Xbox! Not to mention their Arctic environment was amazing.

And for The Golden Compass, Sue Rowe from Cinesite should have been among the four contenders -- they did my favorite scenes in that film.

Just out of Curiosity...Which scenes were those?

The scenes with the blimp and Oxford and London environments. I thought they looked amazing and futuristic. A technology-oriented fantasy world rather than magic. These scenes were what I thought would make the movie different from fantasy films such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. I was kinda hoping the rest of the film would be like that, but other than those aforementioned sequences, I was sort of underwhelmed by the movie. Despite having great character animation, I'm not a big fan of talking-animal fantasy films.

Yeah, I thought alot of the matte paintings were very beautiful...I think the effects were great in the movie...too bad most of it ended up on the cutting room floor...alas...

As much as I would love to see GC win...I think transformers has the lock on this one..

So much for the curse on ILM.... :)

Yeah, I guess the best animated feature just might go to Persepolis (http://mag.awn.com/index.php?ltype=pageone&article_no=3500). Though I haven't watched it yet and I eagerly await its dvd, its been generating quite a buzz amongst film afficianados here for some time and I'm kinda split between this and Ratatouille. It'll surely be a tough one but whichever wins would be totally deserving.

And also good to see that Surf's Up made it to the final three. Way to go Arnold! Btw, though its off-topic, I'd still like to know what you guys thought of the new Chubb Chubbs short film (technically) in the Surf's Up dvd?

I'll just throw in my predictions for fun.

Best Picture - No Country for Old Men
Best Actor - Daniel Day Lewis - There will be Blood
Best Actress - Julie Christie - Away from Her
Best Sup. Actor - Javier Bardem - No Country for Old Men
Best Sup. Actress - Cate Blanchette - I'm Not There
Best Animated Feature - Ratatouille
Best VFX - Transformers

I don't think Persepolis stands a chance, not because of any faults, but simply because Ratatouille was the highest reviewed movie of the year... live action or animation. Beowulf wasn't even eligible because it wasn't animated according to the new Academy standards.

I also don't think Pirates stands a chance only because it won last year. Personally I was more impressed by Davy Jones than Optimus Prime, but since PotC won last year, Transformers will take it home this year.

Poor. Perforances were flat, floating keyframes all over the place. Lighting seemed unmotivated and without direct source or reason. Facial performances were linear and uninteresting.
