View Full Version : Got lucky with $$ building new comp
3 months ago I recieved the news that a great uncle of mine had died. I had met the guy once in my life and for some reason, I really dont know why, he decided to leave my brother and I with a good size trust. It will be enough money to pay for both our college tuitons and all living expenses while we are attending school. This also includes a new computer, I really dont have any idea what to get in terms of hardware. It will be used primarly for Maya and premier, but yeah I play games too. Im looking at spending probably $8000 max with monitor ( I think thats about the limit that the trustee will think is reasonable for a computer ). If anyone has any suggestions on a sweet rig I could build could you just throw out some ideas Im a big 3D newbie. Oh and no Macs, the school i'll be attending has a whole lab full of them. I dont need one more in my appartment. .:buttrock:

Well, in Ito's defence he did say he hardly new the guy.
So I'm sure he wouldn't wish someone dead for monetary gain, and maybe he should be given the benefit of the doubt that this thread and it's title just comes with some questionable wording.
Aahhh, now that's out of the way.......
You're going to spend $8,000 on a comp?
I know it's Canadian $:$, so it's like monopoly money, but still, that's way overboard.
My advice at this point, wait until a definate release date is given for Athlon64.
If it looks like we'll actually get them before Christmas, get something in the mid range (otherwise, opt for a P4 with 800MHz FSB), with 512MB-1GB RAM. Poke around nearer the time and read up on some reviews for motherboards and HDDs.
NV35 is due within a few months for gfx.
Get a 21" CRT (I'm a fan of Sony and OEMs using trinitron tubes myself) and maybe a small TFT for editing documents, browsing and a general secondary display.
Tot all that up, and you still haven't spent more than about $6,000, unless you got fleeced (closer to $4,000 if you're lucky).

You could get a kickass 3dboxx from boxxtech with monitors for under $6000. We're talking dual Xeon 2gb Ram SCSI with a DVD-R/RW a 21" CRT and 19" Flat.
Congratulations on the inheritance. Be sure to make the man proud and use his gift as wisely as possible! That's pretty cool that he did that for you.
