Good Morning all,
This will be my first Challenge, UNfortunatly I couldnt enter the last one, but I just so happen to have a model Lying around that is in need of texturing.

Hes already been textured 1 and a half times, but ive never been happy with them. He is a character we use here for alot of our tests and development, so If we decide we need to stop and start again, we can do so. He does however have a script and short film he will be starring in. This should begin production later this year.

I wont be able to do too many updates fo the next week or so as I have alot of other commercial work on. But I do have the head almost complete. I can post some images later on this week.

I plan to do all the textures by hand. By this I mean, scans etc compiled in PShop and comtinualy painted up in there. However this means careful UVW mapping, and seam concealing. This will be difficult on the main body as its basily seamless.

I do have a few techniques I would like to refine and share as I go with blending maps and vertex colours. I may also try using procedual maps too. I am quite comfortable with them too.

Anyway let me know what you guys think etc.

Oh and some background:
His name is OGGIE, he is a character that was once and underwater dweller, but has been forced to live on the surface in a baron dessert (arnt most.?).
I think thats enough for a start.

That is a great character. He has a lot of possibilities for texture. We're all looking forward to updates, I'm sure.

Thanks Guys.

I will hopefully post some updates this evening or tomorrow evening. As I mentioned the Head is almost done, and I wont be able to start on the rest for a week or so.

Later

Hello All,

I can see from everyone elses posts Id better do an update too keep interest.

As I mentioned the head was almost done anyway so Ive posted several shots of it. I have sepent a few hours working on the shaders today, but also as Imentioned Im pretty busy with work at the moment, so I cant spare much time at the moment.

Okay let me know what you guys think...Dont take the eye into account as they are just stand ins. They are just hiding some nasty UV messes at the moment

Also included is a couple of shots from a divx of an old Texture Im not too happy with. Excuse the marks is the image as I only have this on Divx, and AEffects crashes if I render still from a divx...so they are just screenshots :( Ill post the divx too if anyone is interested. Its old so its proably Divx 3.11 or something.

Enough from me...Lets her what you guys think..

HEy Chico,

Looking good so far- love the 'ribbed' texture on the top of his head, you can almost feel them. Maybe some of the darker areas need to look more dusty, less airbrushed. Other than that, can't wait to see more. I'll be watching.

Hey he's really cute :D
Very cool character, Chico! :applause: I agree with .::STRIKE::. that he is kinda Abe-ish, which is very very cool, because I absolutely LOVE Abe! :D:D
Those textures are very cool, but there seems to be something a bit strange about the render... it almost looks a bit velvety. Unless thats what you were going for...
I really like the colours you used there. I think what it's really missing is a cool diffusion map (if your software supports it (only Lightwave, Maya and one or 2 others support diffusion maps. Oh, and the Diffuse option in Max isn't real diffusion, in case anyone was wondering...)
I am looking forward to seeing your update when you have time to post one :)

L0rd
04-20-2002, 06:10 PM
I don't think he looks like Abe really. Maybe reminiscent of Abe. Same kinda down trodden alien character, but that's about it.

leigh
04-20-2002, 06:37 PM
I actually didn't mean to say he looks like Abe, what I actually meant was that he looks like he belongs in Oddworld :)
When I said "Abe" I was referring to the game, not the character himself.
My brain is a bit cloudy today, so I think I'm not translating my thoughts onto the keyboard properly.... :p

@--> Squirrel
Im quite happy with that texture too. Had alot of fun with it. There was a version that looked like honeycomb so you'd want to lick it and touch it :scream:

@-->Leigh
Thanks for those comments. The velvet thing was a mistake. I did rush this one. I was aiming to make it look sandy not velvety. But i figured...Its early days  Im interested in what you mean by diffusion.? Max does have a diffusion slot in the raytrace material which is what Oggie is construted out of (yes I am talking about a channel different from Diffuse Channels). I am lead to belive that this is misleading though. I think it has something to do with adjusting the contrast in the diffuse channels.? Is this what you are suggesting.? Or are you talking about transluency.?

His helmet is made out of bits and pieces hes found lying around.
The cages and jaw is made out of bone. The mouth piece is made out of a piece of metal gause. The pads in the head Im unsure as to what they are made out of. their purpose it to help Oggie breath. The fins are for cooling, to help keep moisture in...Im winging it here:eek:

OKay well enough for this weekend..but here is the original drawing for Oggie. Done well over a year ago now.

Man I really love those textures on his head. Reading your post about what his head is made of, I'd try and make the metal mesh look different from the fins in the top. Right now you can tell that they are different, but look like they are made of the same stuff. Other than that I'm awestruck, he really looks fantastic.

Thanks heaps,

Thanks too, Really good point aboput the metal gauze on the mouth. I hadnt spotted that but Ill work on that.

OKay expect an update over the next two days. I will proably work on refining the UVWs today, and get the skin texture up and running by late tomorrow. Im now on holiday and as soon as I touch up a few bits and pieces from my last job Ill get stuck into this. Also tossing up if I can spit something else out for the 3dluvr comp in 7 days:shrug: I had started on one, but I ran outta time, and theres only 4 entries so far:p

Isnt it a great proffession when you are doing 3d all day and then you are looking foward to a holiday so that you can do more 3d all day..?

Thanks for the comments, dont worry bout handles...I know who you are...

OKay time for a small update...Ive spent a couple of hours playing with different colours and Im not quite finished but I thought Id provide you guys with where im at right now.

Hes a bit too red...I think Ill make him a little more sandy. Dont take these textures too seriously as Ive only spent a short amount of time on it, and the bump and specular were just thrown on for the sak of this post. Ive only really been playing around on the belly piece right now...The upper shection is next and then the arms. Looking at these I think Im working on the wrong model though...Im sure I modeled more deail in to the ribs etc...Ill look into this tomorrow.

No Update today sorry,

I relised that I was working on the wrong model and when I found the correct one the UVWs didnt transfer properly:sad:
So I took this opertunity to do some tweaks on the model. Ive now fixed his thumbs, and a few other small things. He now has an "outie" bellie button. Tomorrow morning Ill slap some nipples on him and then get stucck into the UVWs again. Maybe an Update tomorrow evening.
Night All,

Chico

NOt much to show sorry, But trust me Ive been working like a dog...Ive been doing all the UVWing today, and Ive goit it to a point where im happy. Sure there will be tweaks, but If I dont produce something soon Im not gonna get this finished in time.

Ive edited my last UVW for today and My fingures are in dire need of sleep...So heres the proof and tomorrow I will have some texturing done for you guys to see....I promise.

Goodness me you've been busy. Perhaps your fingers really need a holiday. Maybe a picnic.

Anyway, you've got some really smooth mapping going on there.
How on earth do you acheive such incredible results?

Can't wait to see the finished work!!!

Keep it coming.

OKay...I lied...

No real update today...Been churning through texturing the skin...Heres progress shots anyway...I wont show larger ones yet as Im doing the seams tomorrow moring. Then Ill show you.

Thanks Lord...I am on holiday... I have my sammies here...but Ive misplaced my juice.???

And thank you too strike. Ill make it...Soon. Ive managed to get out of heaps of work so some other poor sap here is doing it all. So I can turnall my attention to this and RTCWolfenstein:thumbsup:

These are still early. There will be less contrast when Im sorted out, and theskin will be alot greener I think. I quite like the green in the original texture.

I love your approach. I have been entirely too lazy this month, and haven't spent any time on my mapping challenge. I now want to go through and map with the checks so I can paint it up.

Nice work, and thanks for the great presentation.

this dude is cool, the surfacing you have started looks great, and yes I can only imagine what that search engine request would bring up...... ug:D

Thanks guys...Ill be working on the eyes later tonight I hope..Adam...Those were only ever stand ins..Other than that I am happy myself as to how the head looks as it is only a helmet. Still I am always open for suggestions:bounce:

OKay...Small update...Im going home for some foods, Ill be back later tonight...Time I worked out the enviroment so I can focus on what I need too. Otherwise Ill never get this done.

Let me know...and there my be another update in the next 12 hours...(Who needs sleep?)

http://www.oneglasseye.co.nz/uploads/AprilWIP/WIP_OGGIE_13.jpg

BTW...still need to sort out seams etc...and there is only diffuse colour here with no lighting other than default ambient (SIn sin sIn I know)

You know I have been fairly pleased with my UV mapping on this months chalenge, and then I look at all of yours and I go gee I wish I could map that wel, would make my painting easier too. Great method and will go well with mine of colour grouping all areas into their UV maps and such. Thanks for the great stuff I am learning a lot from this along with Leigh's texturing workshops I feel I am learning so much this month.

great googly moogly! :surprised that's a lot of layers broken down up there. I like seperating out render elements for comping, but damn! Was it only the 5 in your second post you broke it into, or did you literally use every piece? Just curious.

Looking very cool. See what you mean about a little plastic feel perhaps, but the maps are still looking really nice. The 'muscle-like' stuff up on top really has a nice feel to it. There doesn't seem to be a lot going on on the..jaw(?) underneath, is that un-mapped? Some bumpy stuff on the skin might help as well. Anyway, hope you get to the finish without any permanent damage :D

Luckily I can just hang back and watch for this one, I hope to enjoy the panic in the forest next month.

Chico
05-17-2002, 11:07 AM
Quick Update...Plastic look reduced...Still not really happy yet:shrug: ...Ill work on it more a little later.

http://www.oneglasseye.co.nz/uploads/AprilWIP/WIP_OGGIE_16.jpg

Thanks Hypercube...Yep, under the jaw is part of the skin...to be continued...later on tonight...

And dont worry bout the layers...I have a habit of recording my progress, and compiling it through the PShop Contact sheet feature. It helps me keep track of my progress and see what im doing. I figure I ll share it with you guys so you can see my (sometimes really backwards) progress.

Also Thanks Leigh, Adam, Kaskai and Iguiniz.:wavey:

geez what resolution do you work at, 1280x1024 and I still had to scrol a little to get the edge or your image. Awsome sompilation, really neat system to see what you have done. I will have to try some of these things in the future. Allows you to go back and see what you have accomplished. and where you still need to work. I tend not to domultipasses and then comp but now looking at how you could simply change the colour of the shadow map and then know what it would look like without re rendering, could be useful when rendering something that takes about an hour at the qulity I want.

anyways I got an S**T load of work to get done by nine (I thought I had till midnight, dang eastern time) So I will go into crits after the challenge as I really like this one. Still looking a little plsticy in a few spots, could be fixed with a little diffusion, and what illumination type are you using for him, I sugget Orennayer for most of him as it seems to be the bonelike structure of the head and such would have a slightly mor matte feel.

OKay...Oggie now has eyes..And there has been quite a bit more reworking on the rending as well....Starting to feel a bit appier with this now...althought it could also be the fact that Ive consumed 100g of coffee and Ive been up for over 24hours now:insane:

Hi,

Just came back from the beergarden. Very hot in Stuttgart. Cannot sleep, cannot work (ummm, to much wine, to hot in my appartement under the roof). Looked up CGtalk.

I like your character. It is friendly. It looks the mood I am in.

Also thank you for posting so much material to show your progress. It is very intersting to see, how your character has developed. I think part of choosing a "winner" of such a wip-challenge should be to evaluate how much material of "work in progress" was posted. I am just starting 3d, Iwant to learn, this helps a lot.

Good night and best regards :)

Yea....Lots...You may a seen a "blis k12" add campagin that we finished up a few weeks ago...really wish we had a bigger budget for it ...also a "Nuttelex" with an evil Squril (Rat thing, Lives in trees...has nothing to do with butter....I cant spell it) squezzing a heart. And a few other bits and pieces..."Animation Station" is due to air on that new TV3 childrens series (What Now typr thing) in July now:thumbsdow .

RTCWolf....yea not good aye....I slept all Saturady to woke up on sunday with my arm feeling Fine...:) but after a couple of hours of GTA3 on the PS2 it was pretty sore again...I think its just a warning sign...a few more breaks couldnt hurt I guess.
