i have been long finished with the first lesson in the learning maya 4 book and at the end of the lesson it tells me to render the fire and what not software, then the particles hardware, then composite. One problem, i am now coming back to composite and i cant do it. I am going to be compositing with combustion. I have managed to do it but it came out all dark and stuff. Who knows how to do this seemingly daunting task?

turn alphaSource to hardware, also you could check Zdepth on, turn on geometryMask aswell,.that you do in your hardwareRenderGlobals.

thanks but i got that far, it's just on the compositing stage, i cant figure out how to put the two together and look good. How could i make the backround the particles are rendered on invisible so i could just place them over the main image? something of that sort.

I'm no expert on compositing, but I think you need to render out an alpha mask for the particle layer. And then feed than alpha mask into the particles layer. Or you might try keying out the background color? But it sounds like Z-depth should fix the problem...
