Hi all:

I'm going to buy a workstaion for vray architectural rendering. My work need to render high resolution image of archtects. Now I come with two choices but same price:

the choice one has fater CPU (Intel Xeon 5345 2.33 8MB/1333) but less RAM (HP 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2-667)

the second choice has slower CPU (Intel Xeon 5335 2.00 8MB/1333) but more RAM (HP 8GB (4x2GB) DDR2-667

Which one is better to buy?

Thank you!

The one thing you need to clarify here is how involved in getting your system you're willing to be.
Someone should create a sticky to make people aware of this.

Because people are gonna come in and give you a bunch of information pertaining to building your own system and why it's better.

I'm not saying that they're wrong at all.
But you'll need to state right off the bat if you're willing to do everything involved with building your own system.
If you just want a system that's gonna do what you want with minimal hassle so you can focus on your work, get that out in the open right now.

So, are you prepared to have someone give you a list of hardware, then go out and buy that hardware and put the system together yourself?
Or, do you want to go with a pre-built system and not bother with all that stuff?

Is there a reason you want the Linux installer kit?

Are you gonna be running Maya on Linux?
I'm not sure that Vray runs on Linux.

You might want to make sure of that.

Is it a 32 bit linux or 64 bit? If it's 32 and you don't plan to change that soon don't bother with more than 4 GB.

I am sorry the Linux is just a typo, the system is for Windows XP 64bit not Linux

The system is a HP worstation-based, so I think it is kind of pre-build. The question is I don't know shoud I pay more money on my RAM or my CPU?

I mean, which one influence the performance more when rendering with Vary?

Ram or CPU for Vray architectural rendering?

guys i have 8 gigs too with (xp64/max64/vray64)
the problem i have is; i try to test render evermotion interior scene and the Ram wont go more than 4 gigs all the time.
I switch boot.ini with \8GB ; it said available in task manager but max64 just wont take it.
It cant be because of the process doesnt require ammount of 8 gig of ram; because I tried to render in 20.000 x 10.000 resolution and still just take less than 4GB

Is it possible that RAM speed or Graphic Card affecting this?
all I can see is that 8 processor always runs in 100% mode (task manager)

how much affecting the speed of ram (fully buffered/ecc) from 533/667/800mhz for rendering purposes (max+vray)

my processor is 2x quad xeon 3ghz 1333fsb
and the test renders mostly done around 30 minutes in 1200x600 resolution
weirdly, max32 in the same system is 5 minutes faster

thanks alot

The rendering uses as much ram as it needs. just because you fill your machine with a thousand gigs doesnt mean it will use it.
