View Full Version : Customizing UI : dark ui with colored icons?
robioto 04-27-2003, 07:51 AM How can I maintain the dark UI with the custom colors/menus/commands I've selected but change the icons from the flat 2D greyscle back into the classic color?
Polymagus icons won't show up on a toolbar in the Dark UI and the other greyscale icons are sometiems hard to read, especially meshtools.
I've tried setting the classic icon preference upon saving my custom UI but it hasn't changed anything even after I restarted Max. I've also checked out my reference manual number 3 and while it mentions other ways to customize the interface it does not mention using the full color icons with the Dark UI.
It might end up being butt ugly but I'd at least like to have the option so I can make a decision. I'd a also like to be able to use the polymagus tools from a toolbar configuration.
Thanks in advance for any advice,

while you are still in the dark ui
go to Customize-> load custom ui sheme-> choose 3d max -4(or what ever version)
now you will get the icons with the dark ui

Thank you nadeemer,
While I wasn't able to get the colored icons I was able to switch them to a grayscale tone that has made the ploymagus icons visible.
It would be cool to have full color icons in the dark ui but as of yet I haven't been able to figure it out. Your tip turned the icons into legible grayscaletones as I mentioned above but the tip didn't bring any of the full color icons back.
At this point I think I'm done messing with it. I think the UI for the customization could use some work to make it more user friendly but at least I've got a UI that will work for me currently.
Thanks again,

Try this:
*Load Max with the Light Grey (default) UI.
*Now go to Customize... > Colors
*Press the Load... button and load the Discreet Dark CLR scheme - note that this will load only the Dark Colors but not the Discreet Icons! The Icon colors will be desaturated and inverted, but still the original ones.
*Now, in the second list of the Colors dialog, find and select "Icons: Enabled" and change the values to Saturation:100%, Value:100%, Transparency: 100% and unckeck "Invert".
This will give you colorful icons over dark-grey UI. (I don't find it useable, but you asked for it ;) )
Save this Custom UI to disk under a new name.

Man do I feel stupid! I didn't realize what the saturation/trans settings were for <even after staring at it for hours>. Thank you for pointing that out.
You're correct about the colored icons not being very legible on a dark ui. Fortunately I was able to tweak the default settings to something that was easier for me to read although in the end they didn't end up being colored.
Finally thanks very much for all of your fantastic scripts, I don't think I'm alone in hoping that many of them will be integrated into Max 6.0 like treematograph. Bevelman is also incredibly handy. Thank you for your generostity in providing your hard work without fees. One thing that makes working with Max so much fun is the strength of it's user community which is always extending max's functionality and making max more flexible and complete.
