View Full Version : Quicktime, IRR and Dual Processors
paulselhi 01-20-2008, 11:30 PM After spending hours and hours trying to figure out why a qt movie rendered from still from c4d stutters when it plays in QT player i may have worked it out
I tried all variations of qt codecs and keyframe settings etc then decided to make the qt player use only 1 processor
it seems to have solved the problem the movie plays now with no stutter ( or very little)
It also seems to be the cause of my flickering IRR issue, if i make C4D only use 1 cpu the IRR is stable else it flickers on and off
Thing is. is there a cure for this so i don't have to make qtplayer and for IRR , C4D to use only 1 cpu ?
I am using an AMD 3800+ dual core on windows xp sp2

Could be a fault with your graphics driver or card. Quicktime on the PC side (unless you use the safe mode) is dependent on DX. As for the IRR, again could be a graphics card or driver issue (doesn't like multithreading somehow), or possibly you have a plugin installed that's causing constant refreshing, try C4D without any plugins (that includes 3rd party render engines) and see if that helps.

Thanks i'll check out the plugins but i think it is an AMD and/or nvidia issue. Same renders to xvid or divs are perfectly smooth
I forgot to mention my board is a lowly 7600 GS i hvae all the latest SP and drivers. Whenever i think about Nvidia and drivers I am reminded of Princess Dianna's last words " Put your foot down, I think we can lose them"
or where they " Don't worry Dodi, we have the latest driver"

Recently, I found that I could not play a simple small Quicktime file without non-stop stuttering when trying to play it from my RAID 0 (4 drive) array. When I moved the file to a simple SATA drive it played perfectly.
From what I've seen some disk caching setups conflict with Quicktime's caching scheme and the result is very erratic playback even on very fast drives.

Thing is that both IRR and QT behave when they are forced to use only 1 processor so , for IRR at least, it must be a cpu thing
However i have just redone the compliation of the problem image sequence, before i was using technoscope on 1024 x 768 images i render the comp by adding them to a background object in c4d ( lazy mans comping !!), this gave a lot of judder, but i redid the render as 1024 x 768 ( no technoscope) in combustion and the movie is smooth
So i have to check whether it is the image format or the use of combustion that makes the difference
codec was sorenson 3
EDIT..Damn i just rerendered from c4d as technoscope and now the movie plays smoothly, i have not changed my qt (7.04) but did add the amd dual cpu patches and did a MS suggested reg hack, but i am not sure if that has helped or wheter it was just my PC/QT messing around earlier
Lets hope it stays stable.... now if only i could fix the IRR issue

Well my IRR is working now, i did quite a few clean ups and upgrades but i think the cure was to reinstall my pen tablet drivers..that may not have been the cure but at a guess it seems the most likeley
