Wow, this is great! What first struck me was the lovely, airy composition that feels perfectly balanced. Then I noticed the magnificent lighting, especially underneath the umbrella and on the woman. There's a lot of ways to get the real light look. I like looking at photographs and studying where the gradations happen especially in the sky. You can see it in this painting I did. Even studying where blooms happen is important. I also go out and landscape paint when ever I have a chance. That helps me freshen up my color sense and it's always better to see it in reality than in second hand photo's.

I usually start off with some quick thumbnail sketches but in this painting I was inspired by the photograph I took and the memories in what I saw. Now I don't take very good pictures so the photo ended up looking almost black and white because of everything was backlit and being a very hot sunny day. It was mainly used as a note for me to do this painting. The photo didn't capture this but I remember the warmth of the umbrella against the very cool desaturated back lit walls. I ended up making the lady more attractive also:) I also made her sculpting something and added some greens around her to help pull the viewer towards the center of interest. In addition I also added hanging cloths. Towards the end, I flipped the image which made the composition way better since we tend to read left to right.

During these trips I usually like to paint on location some rough color studies but certain crowd conditions prevent me from doing so. So a simple photo to help me remember a special moment will do.

Pretty much want to say what everyone else has been saying. I LOVE the look and feel of this. It's funny how with all the advances in technology and the ability to add an almost limitless amount of detail into any project, I find myself much more intrigued and drawn to simpler pieces.

This is definitely proof of the "less is more" theory. Your lighting is fantastic, which for me is what really sets this apart.

Hi Everyone!

This is something that I saw when I was walking around the streets of Salzburg last year while on vacation. I thought that it would make a cool painting. I changed a lot of things like redesigning the buildings and adding the hanging clothes. In the end I also flipped the image to make it a better composition.
