View Full Version : still: First head complete!
Dan Wade 04-27-2003, 03:54 AM OK....this is my first go at a realistic human head. Ive been doing 3d modeling and texturing for some time...but never tried modeling a human head. Work done in Softimage XSI. GI and HDRI was used. SSS implementation coming soon hopefuly. Rendered in Mental Ray.

It's really good for a first try.
I think you have some issues with the proportions. The texture map has stubble and appears to suggest an adult. But the untextured face from the front looks like a child to me. There's something about the size and spacing of the face vs. the volume of the head which looks off. Also the jawline is weak for a man.
The texture map looks pretty good, but I would tone some parts down. The lips, for instance are looking very pink, as iff he were wearing lipstick. Also, the position of the ear looks a little strange, as if it were tilted back on an angle.
i quickly threw your image into photo shop to check the proporation looks fine eyes could be moved up like 2mm if u wana get tech but yer post so wires if u want more critques
maybe its the ears? i dunno need wires:bounce:
great work tho
post some other angles

i agree with jake, the character looks too young to have so much facial hair, plus the lips make him look a little like a drag queen :D i think it would look better with no facial hair..

Cheers for the comments everyone. Very useful. Its a project for uni, and the deadline is soon, so i dont really have time to change any of the modeling. I did change a few of the textures though, and tried to sort the lips out...no lipstick ; ) Also toned down the stubble.
I will post some other angles soon, as well as the ref i used to model from. The shot i posted previously was using a 70mm lens, which gave almost an orthagraphic look, little perspective.
This is using alot smaller lens, but this looks just as weird ; )

Alrighty there Dan,
just curious, but how did you achieve the DOF effect in XSI ?

Wow!
It's a great first head. Looks quite realistic. Did you use photos to texture this guy (I don't mean that you wrapped a photo onto his head though :)) or was it hand painted? I'm texturing a head now and your answer would really help me. The effect is amazing no matter what technique you used.

The model of this head is fine! But the texture is not correct I think..
You can see to easily how the textures of the head are combined in photoshop. get it??
very nice when it is complete!

Alright there Joe. Well..i still find DOF a little slow in xsi, ive got a plug for After effects that uses a depth pass to achieve nice dof...it also has camera highlights. I here u used a similar method on your opening shot of your major project....the wheel shot....u used Shake yea?
Where r u working now?
Im in the process of getting stuff ready to show Framestore.

Yeah, Shake is really nice for DOF 'cause it can recreate the Bokeh effect really easily.
It's a shame that XSI's built-in DOF is so shoddy, I haven't used version 3.0 yet so looking at your render was wondering if they'd updated it from version 2.0.
By the way, I think the model is great - is this something for your final project ? Can't believe you guys don't have to do all the written work that we had to  ...

Well...ive seen some pretty fast stuff in soft for DOF...even good quality too...its just for promo stuff i thought a depth pass appoach would just be quicker.
Cheers for the comments. This is actualy for my pesonal research. But i will be using it for my MA too. Nothing original im afraid....a sci-fi race! lol
What you upto now then dude?
