View Full Version : Animation : is there driven keys in max?
Morbid Angel 04-27-2003, 02:33 AM Im wondering if there are driven keys i max 5? I know in maya you have driven keys where you preanimate animation into a numerical value and then just scroll the slider for that value to change, much easier and faster...Im wondering if there is something like that in max, plz help..

I think you are needing Auto Key or Set Key. I get those two confused in function.
I think...
Or are you talking about wiring a parameter to the scrub?

yeah paramiter to scrub....like value 0= pose 1, value 10 = pose 2

I Googled "driven keys maya" real quick. From what I glanced over, it looks like you want to wire things.
For example, let's say I want
objecta > y position to control
objectb > z position
So, everytime ya move ojbect1 along the y, then objectb gets moved along the z.
In Max, that's called "wiring". You can even do expressions and stuff and doesn't necessarily have to involve 2 objects. That is, you can use multiple objects, sliders or a custom attributes.
'Course, I could be way off base. Some of the other glancing around that I did suggests something a bit different. Over at Chuggnut's (http://www.chuggnut.com/), there is a script called Anipose. Something like that may be more of what you are after. I'm not saying bones explicitly like in Anipose, but the concept behind it.

Wiring paramters is a basic method of set driven keys like Maya, but I think you will find that what more closely matches in max is in fact the Reactor Controller, look it up in the help files, etc.
BTW, thats not to be confused with the reactor dynamics sim plugin that is part of max 5, two different things:)

hay guys here is an interesting question to you, as I havent done much setup in max, I got a car that I need to set up for animation. Besically what I need is for it to be able to drive, so that the weels will be spinnig, and turning...not much stuff, but its kind of hard cuz i dont know much about set up in max. Any guesses?

Morbid Angel,
The equivalent of Maya's driven keys in 3ds max is the reactor controller. There's not a whole lot of information in the help files on it, though Buzz has a really good tutorial showing its stuff. It's similar to wiring but you have a lot more control over the slave object. I can't live without it and I have to say, it's about my favorite feature in max.
The reactor CONTROLLER (NOT reactor dynamics -- different thing altogether); check it out.

3dBuzz.com
It's a VTM in the download section. Issue 2, lesson 9 I think. It's well worth knowing the reactor controller.
