hi there-

i've been looking at this for a little too long, and need some feedback and some help. I'm doing this render for an engineering firm that will use the imagery to bid on a project. i have some questions for you all. deadline is the end of the month. no textures now as i'm doing them at the moment.

they want dusk, how have i done with that so far?

what should i do about windows when theres nothing behind them?

they want grass, and suggested a hair plugin, but i have none. what about doing a scatter with splines and making them renderable?

how would i go about making a parking lot texture? i cant get anything to turn out nicely, it always turns out aliased no matter what resolution i create it at originally.

how do the store lights look/ what do they need?

oh, and the color scheme is whacky, and i'm having a hard time visualizing it, so theres an attached image showing the colors and corresponding materials.

thanks everyone for your replies in advance. :)

color scheme: (greenish-blue bricks? when does that happen?!)

The modeling looks nice,

but I guess it's the camera and render that makes the whole building look like a toy :p

Please post some other views too!

so things are starting to wrap up with modeling and texturing. my biggest hurdle now is the parking lot texture. can i get some suggestions? since there is no interior, what should i do for glass material? more pics to come soon.

-thanks

I'm not sure how whatever you use for the asphalt is aliased...can't you just use a tetxure that tiles nicely? Or maybe use a max procedural texture (like noise or something)

I would suggest setting the GI a little lower, just to make everything visible, then make sure you use a few good lights for shadow casting and highlites.

If it's dusk, then i would make sure the lights are more prominent and things are light more just where the lights are. Use glows too.

That's probably enough suggestions for now.

Oh yeah, do something with the sky too, i think that's why it looks like a toy.

the lights above the door are two blown out... turn them down, there is still light coming from the sky and that shold over power the lights on the wall. even if it is dusk...

looking good..

i should have been more specific about the asphalt... i'm happy with it as is, but they'd like to see parking lines... and they are everywhere. when i try and make them in PS, and apply them they come out aliased, no matter how big the texture. thanks for the replies guys

looking great!!!

Some things:

Background (just a 2D image that spans to the horizon!)

More People

More Cars (even the same car with different colours!)

Also, what program are you using (so people can get more specific)

Looking better, but i think you should;

Model the grass, a few variations of a grass blade plus scatter. And you could get some really nice looking grass. It shouldn't be too render heavy because theres not alot to put down, but it will improve over a flat texture.

On the roof you should add things like pipes, air vents, and use a texture that shows lot's of ridges. You wont find a commercial roof that is flat, they allways have air conditioning vents and things like that.

And on the yellow roof, use a nice "ye old'e" shingle texture, from the looks of things its a small town shopping centre, so i think that i would fit. :)

i'm using 3dsmax5 for modeling, and the RPC plugin for trees and people. i'm a little wary of actually modeling the grass because there will be an animation made from this. the pointy roof is metal, the kind with ridges (they just arent in yet) and i dont quite know what color to make it (the building will be in atlanta).

this is a shot of everything i have modeled so far, minus the cars. is there a good place to get more car models? most of the ones i've been using come from 3dcafe. thank you all for the replies. :D
