View Full Version : My comp shut down and won't come back on!

I have a custom built computer, I built it from parts. It worked fine for two years and Im pretty positive that I put it together just fine. When I built it however I was using Windows 98.

When I got Windows XP I put it on there. About a day after I got it on there I got Warcraft III. I played it a couple times, but it would just shut down on me sometimes in the middle of a game. I didn't really think nothing of it except maybe incompatible video or RAM or something.

Well about two days after installing xp and a day after warcraft III, I tried playing again. I got into a game and about ten minutes later out of nowhere it exited the game...again. But this time it also completely shut down my computer. When I tried to turn it back on....it just wouldn't. There were no beeps and the power light doesn't even come on. What is wierd though....is the cd rom and some periphials power up still.

Any ideas on this?

System Specs are
700 mhz Duran Processor
328 MB SDRAM
Generic TNT2 agp video card
Muse Sound Card
I can't realy remember the rest, except that it has a 250 watt power supply.

My theory so far, which doesn't have anything backing it up really, is that the power supply is blown. When I first built it I read that it is recommended to get a 300 watt power supply for my mother board and processor configuration. That is what made me think that.

I think if the Power Supply was blown nothing would power on at all.

So it sound sliek some other component has gone south. The first thing to try is to get a can of air and blowout everything in the case and re-seat the ram and video card. If the CPU is really dusty it may have over heated ..when you press the power button does the fan on the CPU come on? Also try reseting the BIOS settings.. there is usually a jumper on the board that you short out for a few seconds.

If none of this makes a change then I suspect either the motherboard is fried or the CPU is fried. Hard to tell which. Since your peripherals are getting power I doubt the Power Supply is bad.

Ive tried taking everything out and the reputting it all back in. Ive dusted like a miad also. The fan doesn't come on. Nothing changed.

That sucks....my second thought was the mother board. Thanks for answering my question. I figured it was going to be something big.....

What motherboard is it? Actually I think if the motherboard was fried then pressing the power button wouldn't turn on the Power Supply so it could be the proc.. What was the cooling conditionsin the case? It might also just be the video card is blitzed.

last time i had that, it was my CPU that was shot. If u never take off the heat sink to re-apply the thermal grease every 2 or 3 months.... u'll have heat issues.

Every two or three months? Are you kidding? That's not neccessary at all maybe very two or three years unless you are overclock happy or something?

well, for me, after applying the Artic Silver 3 grease on my Athlon XP 2100, my CPU core temp is approx 50*C and within the 72 hour burn in period, it drops to about 47*C but within 3 months, it dries up and the temp shoots up back to like 52*C on bootup.... it hits 65*C regularly under load by that point....

but then again, my system case is made of steel... shoddy cooling... though i do what i can including hiding all the electrical wires (u'd be surprised to see how this is done) so that u cannot see them hanging over the board.

But at the same time.... 6 system fans, and a really nice heat sink fan combo... but yeah, heat issues.. -.-"

Id have a look into the power supply. I had a problem once, after a power surge of about half a second, was an older power supply. After that nothing worked anymore. so i opened it and saw a spot in the power supply, roughly 2cm in diameter, which was burned black.

singularity: have you ever considered that AMD cpus get hot as hell fire and maybe 6 system fans arent a solution forever? i saw a video, about how P4 and athlon react when you take of the whole cooling body for about 20 seconds: the P4 just stopped, the application (quake 3) stopped running, and crashed. the athlon kept running, but after 15-20 seconds reached about 400° Celsius, exploding and spitting the inner parts of the DIE all over, ruining the cpu (of course) and the mainboard.

here is the url to the video, its really worth being downloaded ;)

I forgot to mention..have you smelled the power supply.. does it smell like smoke?

hahahah that movies is so BS

They reckon that a 2ghz p4 only reaches 34c with out cooling at all. hahahaha yeah right, thats technically impossible, those things produce quite bit of heat.

Just goes to show how full of c...r...a...p tomshardware is
