Hi,

I'm rigging my Sei Whale model and so far I'm really happy with how it's turning out.

Here is the test animation:
MPEG-4 Video (http://www.Carm3D.net/media/WhaleTest.MP4) (Quicktime 6 recommended)

If the link doesn't play, or for more information, check him out in my creatures gallery.

Cheers!

Out of curiosity, what is this model going to be used for? I like what you have so far.

Padding my demo reel. :D

Thanks! :bounce:

it looks good so far, but i think u need to add some secondary motion, also the back main fin looks like a solid piece, seems like it should be more fluid...

that whale looks really small cause the light that is being shined on it appears really big... i'd imagin the light patterns to be much smaller, but then again... why is this whale so close to the surface that light is even hitting it? Id imagin the whale to most likely be a bit deeper in the water
Cheers,

I’m like Gremlin,, for the water to be that dark the light is too bright..and has quite a big pattern.

the floor of the ocean has more stuff on it. If it is going to be that smooth make it sand base..now it looks like rock base..

the whale should be larger in comparison to the grass, moss, kelp that you have on the floor.

the whale could have more mass.. looks to stream line, maybe its the side fin could be larger??? got me.

Do not hold me accountable for any of the above post!!!
Its way to late for me to think full thoughts..

Its looking good, just one or two things and you are there...

I added springs on his tail flippers as I intended to all the time. :p

You can see the latest here:

Test anim (http://www.carm3d.net/media/WhaleTest.MP4)

the ground you see in the render is just a flat plane with a displacement map.. Just a placeholder. I intend to model a more elaborate ground terrain for him eventually.. Complete with coral and such. Should be cool.

As far as the lightpatterns.. (sigh) Okay.. I guess I'll make another one with a finer pattern.

I'll keep you all posted.

As far as the comment about the whale having more mass.. I modeled the whale from drawings of an actual Sei Whale. Sei whales are very streamlined fellows.. They're not big mammas like the sperm or blue whales.

Huhuh.. huhuh.. He said sperm.

Umm...I'm no "whaleologist" but I'm almost certain whales don't have that kind of range of motion in their tail. That whole back half is dedicated to up and down movement to propell that massive bulk. There's some side to side movement that they're capable of, but nowhere near the extremes you've got there. I've seen a good amount of whales--even some in person--and I've never seen that kind of movement, even when they're breaching. Again, I'm no whaleologist so if I'm wrong here please correct me.

His/her skin looks too smooth...too dolphin~like...other than that...looks good!

SpaceFork,

Hehe.. You are absolutely correct. No whale could writhe like this.. I am merely showing off my elaborate spinal rig. The final animation won't have this kind of motion. Just a test.

wgreenlee1,

She's not textured yet..

Cheers!

Well I got the rigging done.. Here is an environment for him to swim around in that I'm working on...

Coral growth by Sasquatch.

Until next time!

I'm lovin' the environment. Only comment would be to change that corral a bit. To me it looks like it's been repeated too many times. Other than that it's great. You going to use depth of field rendering on this?

Thanks! :D

Good suggestion.. I'll make two instances of Sasquatch to break it up a bit.

> Other than that it's great. You going to use depth of field rendering on this?

Wasn't planning on it.. At least, not initially.
