After a full 20 MGAC's the ever popular 12 tri challenge has returned to start off the new years MGAC rally. You may notice I hosted the previous (and may I say disasterous) round but the winner 'iSOBigD (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=146341)' has asked me to start this one too has he hasnt the time at the moment.
So here be said challenge:
MGAC - 51 - The 12 Triangle Challenge!
Your mission, should you choose to accept it (as if you could resist) is to make a character, vehicle, weapon, environment, item, or other miscellaneous object using only twelve triangles.
Yes 12, not one, not two, not 37, 12!
You may not, under any circumstances, exceed the twelve triangle limit, but you may—if you wish—use fewer than twelve triangles.
So, you might decide you just want to make a fancy box. That's cool; I've seen some pretty neat box textures around. But the point of this challenge is to go above and beyond what has been done before. We want rigged characters, race cars with turning wheels, planet-destroying behemoth weapons that only a god could wield. And all with those twelve little triangles.

So, the specs:
Triangle budget: 12
Texture budget: As many of whatever you want at any size up to 2048x2048 as long as it isn't a displacement map.
Guidelines for final entries:
You must provide at least a still render with textures and a screengrab from your 3D software with edged faces or wireframes turned on so we can verify the twelve triangle claim (Or even better capture the tri counter in the same shot. Animations and beauty renders are totally sweet, but not necessary.
The deadline for entries is Friday 25th January 2008 11.59pm GMT

Texture size = 2 times 1028x1028 (Diffuse, Bump)
each pyramid has 4 tris (no bottoms) and the ground is 2 tris aswell.

Yep needed to do this... so here is a 12 tri white parrot, or something along those lines :)
Another wonderful addition to matsmans lowpoly animal collection :p
Woops... forgot beauty still.. I hear it when you want it!
These are wires (12tri's) and texture(256x256) ...
I also had thought of an quicky 12 tri streetlight... may do that one as well.. although not as spectacular.
BTW... tyjotr... why not do a few pasteboard trees or humans to use up those two tri's you got left... or put them in the groundplane to create a nile...

I know this is the lowest common denominator of 12-tri challenges...a box. Oh well, I had fun texturing it. Made the mistake of chamfering the edges of the hipoly, now it has black-edge. *dramatic sigh*

I see that errors prevented my last post from being, uhh, posted. Anyway, to summarize I said that I was excited to see a 12 triangle challenge, because damn, it sure is a challenge, and would try to put something together on my laptop (with no mouse, just a touchpad mind you) in less than 6 hours while I work.
I have my end-result: An AMORPHOUS BLOB! I had hoped to include some actual detail, but lack of a mouse got me frustrated during texture work. I also didn't have enough tris to give him stubby little arms AND debris floating inside the goo... which doesn't really look much like goo... ANYWAY:

And wireframe shots (with texture). There is a plane inside with 2 tris that I forgot to wireframe, it's not a crazy texturing trick. Oh, textures, right. A monstrous 1024x1024 diffuse (because I didn't bother to resize it) with a 1024x1024 normal map and a 1024x1024 specular. I should really resize them down to about 64x64 or something.

12 Tris on the nose, even though two of them aren't very visable on the eye.

Hey guys, cool work so far. And really great challenge!!
Heres my entry, a Wild West environment. 12 Tris. 2 x 1024 x 512 colour and 1 x 1024. I didn't / won't have time to finish it completly, but its close enough.
EDIT - thanks for the kind words guys! I agree that the images were far too dark, so I've quickly re rendered them. Also forgot to mention previously that the texture obviously all include a Alpha, bar the background and Floor. (All aplhas are the same size as the colour maps)

I'll say. Puts my blob to shame, though not that I was really very proud of it to begin with...
It seems like that should be the background in a Nippon Ichi title.

Nice work JezGreen, just goes to show how much can be achived with clever poly work + good texture... I think I am gonna have a crack at this one tonight.. should be pretty fun!

dammnit just noticed the deadline... I'm not sure I will be able to get my idea done by then...
Hmmm do I go out tonight? or do I 3d model...am I allowed to submit mine tommorrow seeing as I only found the post today? :)

holy smokes this is going to be close :D I worked on the concept on paper at work... and I'm rushing to get it done now... I'm hoping it ends up as good as I have envisioned it :)

ok.. so I've really rushed this one just so I can make it in time... but I'm going to go back and re-do the textures and add rigging and maybe a rudder or a flag at the top (I've still got two tri's left) but you at least get the concept I suppose.......
I really enjoyed this challenge, look forward to doing some more and re-doing this one when I have more time!

Well after a whole day spent deliberating the results (well ok i just kinda forgot i was meant to be judging it :p) ive come to the decision that JezGreen is the winner due to the amount of use he got out of the 12 tri limit, I would say that spex texturing was a little better but the idea of the round was to take the tri limit as far as possible and thats exactly what Jez did with the entire set. Well done mate! and well done to all the competitors! great round.
Over to you Jez to set up the next round! :)

The MGAC 52 is up and running. I think its quite a fun subject, but if people arn't to keen on it let me know.
