malc0lm 04-26-2003, 08:02 PM Hey all!
Need some help.. Am trying to create a photorealistic water-tower
(first try at photorealism too). Since I cant do texture (suck at it) Im approtching the problem with shaders instead. I cant seem to get it just right. This is my progress so far:

Please, give me tips and tricks. Any tut-urls is appritciated too :)
BTW, rendering with DirtyNUTS now but its taking forever (rendering at 3h at isnt near finished while the pic above rendered in about 2hs).

That text on the twoer just doesnt seem right to me.
and also the specualr is totally unvaried maybe try messing around with it.
I would say the main problem is that it has the "flat" look you get from not aaduusting your specular.
consider that your water tower has paint which is not totally smooth. thus you can not have totally smooth surfaces to your tower.
also some rust would look good.

modeling looks nice mate, as for texturing im not to hot myself:shrug: but id try making some grime maps ect in ps.
Mike.
the modeling is beatuiful.
I have one hint if you are using Bodypaint there is a good trick to adding rust/dirt to the seams in your object.
I normally only do this with windows but anyway.
take all your UV's and get them arranged in order of size then take an airbrush that has the color that you want the grime to be,
the along the edges of the uv's try and trace a straight line. the goal is to not deam one.
if you only do this along the edges you get a nice looking grime in the cracks edges look.
of course you might have to royally screw with your uv's to do it.

I don't think it should take 2 hours... maybe 20 minutes?
The shadows are too sharp...
and.. ummm.. it's too clean
Give these 2 a go:

WOW! So much response in so little time.. Truly appriciated!
Cant use bodypaint since I have XL :/... Nice links there! Thx!
(Im tired, my grammar isnt here)
Did a small update

The main tank is the only thing with the updated texture..
Is the "worn" too little or too much?

The teXt is to horizonatally streched, nobody could ever read it from one particular direction. All the text should fit into 1/4 - 1/5 of the radius of the barrel. Also, the text is far too worn away. Bring some of it back.
Try making your shadows a little more purple (look are reality - no shadow is black EVER).
A hint of yellowish orange (5%) from your main light source would add to realisim since it looks like the sun is either just rising or setting in this shot.
You need some stains on it. Just some general overal age. See http://www.dvgarage.com for this. They rock.
If you have version 8 of Cinema 4D, get up to speed on HDRI, that will make this scene look hot! :D
Looking good so far! Let's see more progress! :)
maybe some fog too. your sky pic is also a bit funky I havn't ever seen a sky quite like that one.
but looking good man.

You'd also expext to see some vertical rust stains running down the sides.

agree with adamt on rust stains...etc.
basically think about weathering etc.
rain, wind, damp/dry conditions, wear and tear etc and what effects this would have on the materials...also at the moment it all looks like one type of material...lots of different materials may have been used..not sure whether it would all be whitewashed etc..rough up diffusion and specular channels etc...
read all the links guys posted all very useful.
(not sure about background is that a photo?)
