View Full Version : Effects : BIG water splash ?
hugodog 04-26-2003, 07:05 PM Hi,
I need to create a somewhat realistic water
splash. A big one, sort of the one like when you
throw someone into the pool.
Can anyone point me to the right direction?
Tutorials will be appreciated.
Thanks for helping...

there are plugins that achieve this effect simple, but i guess you want the standard max way, i suggest using the ripple modifier in a dense mesh (high poly) with particles that start at the second the object splashes. a good water material will make this believeable.

i really doubt his gonna achieve a great looking splash effect without a plugin to be honest, the way u just said is probably the only simple way to do it, for great ripple, splash effects i would try using something like this Digimation Splash http://www.digimation.com/software/asp/product.asp?product_id=88 its what i use and it makes splashes in seconds thing is u need education version of max to use it :)

if you want it real then i would go with eith real wave or real flow.
real flow beats the crap out of digimation splash if you ask me

Yes use realwave or realflow....
check it here http://www.nextlimit.com
I don't recommend realflow, it's for small, detailed water simulation, for bigger ones it's time, and space consuming
Realwave can be good choose but you can simply use built-in Reactor and add some particle system for additional splash. You can achieve very realistic effect this way.

i've used real flow before. it's pretty cool. but if your not going to buy any plugins its best do do what anim said, reactor with particles.

who said anything about buying plugins?
j.k.
i think i'll shut up before i get in trouble

Hi, thanks for all those replies...
Anyone seen any good tutorial for making realistic
water splash with reactor and particle?
I've been playing with it.. so far I can not get it
realistic enough. Any more help is appreciated.
Thanks again,

Are you talking about the water ripples or the splashing particles? You can do all of that stuff well with MAX out of the box. The important thing to remember with splashes is the speed and rate of emission is a curve and not linear. I did all of the splashing of the Golden Gate Bridge sequence in "The Core" with just default MAX particles. Now that's pretty large scale stuff but the same technique of mapping facing particles with radial opacity maps and noise applies. A weird little technique I came up with to make the motion more natural or organic was to create an emitter from a highly segmented plane. Then animate it with two different noise frequency levels. Finally emit particles from the surface with no initial velocity, BUT with motion inherited from the emitter geometry about 500%. This "tossed" the particles in a very realistic natural fashion. it was fast and looked good - no fluid simulation necessary.

Brandon, can't wait to see that shot in the core, the movie doesn't actually come out for a while here in aus which kind of sucks. Going to the premiere of xmen 2 tonight in Sydney which should be great ;)
Hugodog, I litterally spent 40 or so minutes on a splash for a project I was working on just roughing it out but ditched it as the client went with live action before I got to actually show them anything for the splash sequence. But if you're interested in the max scene I've put it up for you. I can't stress how non tweaked it is at this stage as I litterally started and didn't even get as far as even doing a playblast (er preview) of it or anything. But check it out as it might point you in the right direction.

Hey Alan, I think you can check out the whole sequence on the CCafe website...though it holds up much better on the big screen :)

Wow,
Mr Allan McKay and Mr. Brandon Davis himself
answering my question. I must've been blessed.
Thank you both. Really... really appreciate it.....
Yes, mr Davis, I was looking just that kind of big
splash (realistic). I'm going to find and download
that splash sequence of the Core now.
Unfortunately, the movie hasn't come up yet in
my area too.. soon they said.
Mr. McKay, I've learn a lot from you (3dluvr). Let me
just express my gratitute again. Thank you.
And thank you for the splash001.max. That would
really help a lot in my case.
Best regards to both of you,
hugo

Btw, Brandon,
Where is that CORE sequence on CCafe?
Can' t find it. Is it available publicly?
Thx

Thanks Brandon,
Downloading now...
Would it be too much to ask if you could shed a
little light on how to approach the situation?
I found Mr McKay's splash001.max is still not
realistic enought especially the part where all
particles are started to come down.
Thank you,
Regards,
Hugo
