Is it possible to find world space position from a uv coord on polys?
you can it on a nurbs object
i.e
pointPosition nurbsCylinder1.uv[1.79][4.79];
// Result: -0.811743 0.796932 -0.583178 //

any help appreciated

In uv texture editor you can convert selection from uv to vertex, so try to see what it does in script editor. Use that command, and then add command for getting world position from vertex (sorry I don't have maya on laptop, so I can't tell exactly)

you could also create Hair on the poly mesh. Then delete everything from the hair system except one follicle. Select that one follicle and look in the channel box or attribute editor - the follicle shape node takes a UV position and the follicle transform node returns that position in worldspace.
