My favorite is "Maya 4.5 Savvy" because I'm a noob and it has excellent tuts.

My second favorite is "Complete Maya Programming" because it has the only adequate introduction to Maya's dependency-graph structure that I have encountered. Chapter 2 of that book will likely be the only one of immediate interest to a noob. If anybody can recommend something better--deeper, please let me know. I need all the help I can get.

Hint: If you do a search for "book" on the Maya forum here you will get a lot of worth while results.

I got the Learning Maya books with maya and those are really helpful. Darn expensive though if you buy only one or 2 of them.

Also, the books give you a lot of hotkeys and multiple ways of doing things which is nice. Very detailed as well. The foundation book is a nice overview approach that goes beyond the Instant Maya stuff. They use all hand-on tutorials which is how I learn best.
