I've started modeling the assets for my reel which I need to complete at the end of the Maya course I am taking.

One of the main character in my short is this GeeBee Racer plane.
It still lacks the small wheel in the back, a cockpit and all the detailing (flaps, wires, rudder, etc.)... But I wanted to get some feedback on the general shape so far.

Needless to say, the texture is just something I threw together in a couple of minutes... Final version may also use different colors and a different pattern (maybe black/yellow).

What do you think so far? What should be changed? Improved? Any tips will be appreciated! Thanks.

P.S. Here's how it's supposed to look like. Model (http://www.nwhobbytech.com/geebee_z_photo_page.htm) , B&W 1 (http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/4515/gee7.jpg) , B&W 2 (http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/4515/gee6.jpg)

looks like a good start, the wings are maybe a little flat and as you said needs more details but overall i think its coming along nicely

I am aware that the wings look a bit flat, but that is how it is in the pictures I saw and the drawings I worked from.

I think it's a good start. You might want to post time wireframes as it's hard to see the shape of the plane.

For the most part I think there is a little more detail in the tail in the original. There are some nice tight corners in the real GeeBee Z. Keep plugging away. I would look for the actual planes for the GeeBee Z. Once you have the plans for a model it's pretty easy to get an exact replica for the real one.

What are you making the model for?

Thanks for writing Omita, I appreciate people giving me their view of my work.

I will ofcourse add much more detail to the tail and wings, I'm just trying to get some feedback on the general shape before I detail it... Which leads me to my next question, what do you mean by "There are some nice tight corners in the real GeeBee Z"... In which parts exactly did I go wrong?

As for my purpose behind this model... I am making an animated short as my demo reel/final project for my Maya course. I wasn't trying to make an exact replica of the GeeBee Z, it could have been a fictional plane, but the GeeBee looked exactly like the plane I envisioned when I did the storyboard for this short, so I went with it.
The plane will probably only be seen while in fast motion, and there aren't any close-ups... But I still want it to look good up-close, both as an excersice for me, and so that it can look good if I render any stills.

Here's an update. I added some small details (vents, wires, etc.), a cockpit (even has a pilot's chair in it), finished the edge of the tail, and worked on the texture some more (I still want to dirty up the texture and add a bump map).

What do you think about it? Any tips?

make the paint more shiny and reflective You can add a naked ladie on the black part of the nose like the trukers have and maybee some white crosses or sculls as for the count how many bad planes pilot took down. The modeling looks good.
Keep on posting.

Actually the "decals" are based on the ones used on the real plane, and I don't recall any naked ladies there... not that there's anything wrong with those ;)
And as for a kill count... It's pretty low considering it's a race plane. :p

I do plan on playing with the specularity and reflection levels for the final composite.

BTW - here's a small preview of the short I am going to use this plane in:

It's going to be an aerial race between two planes.

You might want to change your texture makes it look almost identical to the one you can buy from De Espona. Got the same #'s and symbols. I know you modeled but that was just the first thing I thought of when I saw it. Try white, like the one on Rocketeer... That was sweet But could you please post wires of your GeeBee??
THanks,
B

Here is one wing

The texture is almost identical because (as far as I know) only one plane was ever made... And those are the numbers which were on its wings, as can be seen in this picture (http://www.nwhobbytech.com/NWHobbyTechImages/geebee83.jpg)... At least those were the numbers I found on every single picture of this plane that I could find on the net.
I actually found a scan of the decals from a model kit of this plane, took the decals into Photoshop and recreated them from scratch in a new layer.

If anyone mistakes my model with the one from Espona, I'm going to take it as a compliment. And you should know what I'm talking about, as the creator of the JP Jeep which was featured on CGChannel (I think it was CGChannel) with the headline "Real or Not"... That is the ultimate compliment.

As for an alternate color scheme, I may create one with different colors to race with this one in the short I am planning... Unless ofcourse I have the time to model a whole different plane.

Anyway here are the wires... I know it's a mess, I built it months ago, if I did it today I would do it totaly differently, and probably with polys and not NURBS.

hey thats pretty cool. I had no idea there more than one. Then Again that is my opinion based on the movie Rocketeer. (just because they had a white one) Shows you what I know :)You remembered my jeep Cool. I also just switched from modeling with nurbs to poly and using Sub D's. Anyways, what is your other plane going to be? are you going to add more detail the the wings and stuff? Thanks

wow, i love the ground texture....are you going to post an animation?

brianellebracht - I was planning on adding more details, and on having a second plane... But what I actually do and not do depends on how much time I have to put into this project. I have a month to complete this short and it is just a part time project aside from my paying gigs. I am currently modeling the pilot(ess). And no, I haven't decided on the other plane yet.
Attached to the bottom of this message are the wires I forgot to attach to my last message

bigfatclown - Ground texture? What ground texture?
This project is part of a short animation I am working on right now, and when it's done I will be sure to post it here.
