I have a question in regard to format etc.. What size do you generally create your images at. I'm just curious because I want to enter some of these contest and coming from both a print and video background the standards vary wildy. Do you work with huge files (24 in x 32 in) at 300 dpi or do you keep the resolution at 72 dpi and keep the file within a manageble size for compositing? I know it seems like a stupid question but I want to know.

I work at 4096 longest side at 300 ppi, though it is very taxing on you computer system. It will get slower the larger the psd gets. This is just my way of working through a painting. I am a detail freak however. Tip is if you paint large and then reduce it, it will look more highly detailed. This is how i work.

Others may do it differently. I sometimes work on a separate psd painting a complex layer set then merge it and copy over to the main psd.

the secret here, is no secret at all actually, but well that's what I do , I always paint twice the final output resolution, for tv or film and yeah I agree with comment above, painting more than 4k is not necessary, for must of my work I do it a 72 DPI's but that changes in each artist opinion, sometimes you can't handle a composition in fusion ,after effects or whatever with a .psd file of 200 layers, I always prepare a file with flatten sections or areas to work with at the end I might have 3-4 different purpouses .psd of the same matte painting
