thats way cool, you need to make your own full length movie!!!
if anyone can be stuffed downloading all that - Its well worth it!
models kickass, animation and composition kicks ass. Since i dont know much about VFX, i cannot comment technically but well done :) :applause:
I very much like the composition, the models are very cool and the scene is directed very ok:thumbsup: i was wondering, what software did u use for tracking/compositing etc?

Excellent work, nice presentation, your work looks great. I love the detail in the robots and how well everything is put together. But the real question is... can you do mechanical spiders? Very nice work.

thanx for all the positive feedbacks so far :)
I was hoping to use Inferno, but hey, it costs $1000000 US. So...
I had two options at school, Adobe Aftereffect and Combustion 2. Combustion "2" is unstable, so I chose the slower aftereffect.
Mechanical spiders ehh, are you Shawn's spy? Shawn is my vfx supervisor at VFS. He is the "Mechanical Spider KING"!
great job james, I love it!

First of all excellent modeling and particles job. In regards to integration, well I saw 1 reflection pass... but really you needed a lot more. Everything just seemed not grounded. It was then that it hit me that nothing was being relfected other than that one building. In reality we would have seen hundreds of relections in all of the buildings.
You chose a tough project and some really tough angles. Other than rebuilding a lot of that city I don't see how you could do it properly.

hey nice work, thats from the 3d animation campus? uhm would reflecting HDRI before composition be a smart way too get those reflections into the mech, but for the buldings to reflect him will be some after work..

Yes, I only have one reflection pass on that building. There are also tones of other compositing errors that I just didn't have time to fix. In VFX stream, we had to switch to Maya after 6 month training in XSI, and basically start from ground up. Time was really not our friend. I had to make lots of compromises. The reflections on buildings, roads, lighting passes from jet engine and missiles, and other suttle details were the ones I compromized. They are not hard to setup at all. Just needs time.
Thanx for the great comment.
i have one question tho..did u not use any tracking software? (matchmover, boujou) Becoz i really would love to know how u did this! (hopes for a tutorial ;) )

Hi!
This looks really good! There are too few movies out there with giant flying robots firing missiles over downtown city areas! :buttrock:
One question: what DivX settings did you use?? 'Cause that compression is delicious! :D
Cheers,

Your work kicks ass!!
Very inspiring work man. I can easily look past the errors and still see a great piece of work. I know how difficult it is to manage time as a student along with tons of other things. I only hope that when I finish my reel, it will look as good as yours.
Great job

'Cause that compression is delicious
Uh... 50 meg for a 2:05 movie I hardly even consider "compression"!!! Of course it looks "delicious". Get back to me when you have a 5 meg file that looks like that. Then it's time to talk about "amazing".
To the reel; Very nice. But the "landing in the street" composite was all black level mismatched. Also some a-wee-bit-too exaggerated disttorsion passes here and there.
But whatever : It rawked. MORE FLYING GIANT ROBOTS IN FEATURE FILMS :D

hey, I am no expert on video compressions. If you have a better compression system, do let me know.
for my divx setting. I just changed the "1 pass" setting to the quality based compression, and max key frame around 400. I was told that If I compressed the audio to mp3 1st, I could probaly bring it down to ~35mb... However, I still like the quicktime sorensen3 codec we had access to better.
Lorecanth, you said that you were one of Shawn's 1st students at VFS in one of my friends' thread, I am just wondering which class were you in??
No tracking involved, Just match the camera aspect ratio to the plates. I would use Maya live for 3d track, and Combustion for 2d track though. (that's the best we have at school).
as for the tutorial, I gotta finish putting my profolio together 1st so I can start applying for jobs. It's all about meeting the deadlines. So, maybe later if you are still interested.
I did go crazy with the distortion maps. cauz I love them.:) . but you are right, not everyone likes them.

For starters, setting a lower bitrate on the compression would make it smaller. But don't sweat that, It looks good, it's high res, and people seem to have the strength to download it, so why bother :)
I'm just a sucker for advanced compression. That's just me. But I'm crazy like that. *insert manical mad-professor laughter here*

James I don't know if you remember me but I was one of shawns first visfx students. In regards to the time I know exactly how that goes. The only thing you can do is just keep going. You did a good job, send it out see if you get a bite. If not start again, it's amazing what you learn the first few months out of school.
