View Full Version : Modelling : Smoothing Problem. Pls help.
darkdeathdreame 04-26-2003, 06:49 AM Basically I created two spheres, combined them, merged multi edges and then applied smooth. And then I get all these black dots.
Can anyone kindly explain what these dark areas mean? How they come about and how to fix/avoid them? What problems will arise if I ignore them, etc?
I get these stuff quite often especially when creating my own poly faces.
Yes I'm new to 3D modelling.
Thank you! :bounce:

does this appear in the render??
not sure what it could be...might be your video card?
the settings on the smooth?
also you could try merge the verts manually?
just throwing up a few suggestions.

there was no problem when I used "exponential" instead of "linear" for the smoothing. However I would like to know why this happens.
And it looks far worse in the renders :p
Attached is another image to illustrate a dark region problem I frequently have. Any explanation?
Thank you! :wavey:

Ah, I had a similar problem, and this is a simple explanation.
Somehow, along the way, the "vertex normals" have been locked, and upon tweaking or modification, the normals just wont seem to be nice any more.
You can probably fix this by unlocking the vertex normals;
Select the object or maybe the vertices.
edit polygons --> normals --> set vertex normal OPTIONS
Mark the unlock normals option and apply.
I think some tools by default, locks the vertex normals.

i also saw the same smoothing on edges if you smooth it too softly then those dark areas appear.

Thanks! Unlocking it worked for the smoothing problem!
However it did not fix the 2nd one :D
anymore ideas?

I was just going to ask about smoothing normals...thanks for the link!
