View Full Version : Modeling: Splines question
joecool 04-26-2003, 04:18 AM sorry, I'm obviously a newbie...:(
okay, say I make a 'virtual studio' and have a chair that I want to model. so in the top viewport I go around the curve for the back rest, then I want to go down in the front view without breaking my line. can I do this?
I hope you know what I mean.
I know that I can attach and weld the vertices, but I was just wondering if this is possible, it would be much easier.
thanks.

Well Joecool as a newbie I must give you a piece of advice. I think you should take a close look at your modeling arsenal and then figure the best tool to do the job. I would recommend Polygonal modeling or using your Loft tool to make the base model then convert to poly or mesh. Bottom line is now days especially something as basic as a chair using spline with surface tools is taking the hard approach.

I guess I didn't quite make myself clear enough. The chair itself was an example.
What I should have said (I'm not always that great at explaining myself) is can I continue a spline into the next viewport without stopping.
btw, I would have used lathe or loft if I was making the 'bars'.;)

I don't think its possible to continue a spline in another viewport by simply moving the mouse over to the other port..sucks..but rhino 3 can do it..:)

You can do it in Max as well, but you only can do it working with NURBS (same as Rhino does it in fact).
If you press the key -i- while doing a spline, then the mouse pointer will be positioned in the center of the screen allowing you to carry on with your spline whatever its size. Only in one plane though.

I guess I'm still not making myself clear. I don't want to keep the spline on one plane. The point is, say I made the first line in top viewport, what if I want to come down on the z axis (front or left viewport) can I continue the spline through the viewports without breaking the line?
but I don't think it's possible, so it doesn't matter.

very easy to do.
when you are drawing the spline simply change the viewport. so say I am drawing in the top viewport to see the z axis I just hit R to change to the Right viewport. And so on and so forth.
you cannot mouse to another viewport and draw as it would require you to right click on another viewport to select it and that would cancel the spline.
hope this helps.

nope, sorry, that doesn't work either. I thought that would work as soon as I read it, but it still restricts it to one plane :(

I repeat, you can do it with NURBS. Go to Create Shape. Choose NURBS and then you can change between viewports.
