Everything about it is really very good! Congratulations for a great piece of work.
Lots of good stuff seems to come from Ringling - must be a good school.

If its not letting you render quicktime to a video, render out the images, and quicktime lets you import image sequences and then you can export your quicktime movie, might take longer but it works for sure.

incredible work!
the part, when he realise he have the pretty face, and the part when he fight against the other nomorehead man are incredible!
could you explain more about the tool you use, and how?

One of the coolest concepts ever!!!

The only thing I can crit is the lack of subdivisions on the faces... other than that... I loved everything!

the ambience, the STORY, ....just everything

great film making. excellent job. its really nice to see someone put that much into telling a great story. so simple of an idea, but just like pixar's *simple* ideas, that turn out to be some of the greatest shorts ever, executed to perfection.

Wow!

Man...the music and concept are fantastic on this.
I'm digging the whole idea.

Just a few crits tho.

- When we see the nohead man for the first time...there is a brief but very noticeable period where his feet crash right through the sidewalk.

- The lighting seems a bit over saturated when fishhead man stands up and looks to his right.

I could have just said. "WOW I LOVE IT!!" but I think creative critisim is something we all could use.

the music is really really nice, and adds a lot to the movie.

exceptional! :applause: one of the best shorts i've seen for quite a while...

very good animations, i dig the blend between cartoon and real life a lot! your modeling is also very compellling, color choice and textures are well chosen and your lighting and rendering skills add to the atmosphere...

you did the sound yourself too?

my only crit is that i don't understand the cut with the first appearance of the headless man - if his head just got chopped off, why does it just leisurely roll by? his appearance is also a bit unmotivated, i understand you wanted to surprise us, but there's no tension buildup before... just my two cents, apart from that you are a big motivation to get to work again! ;)

would you recommend Ringling School?

I tried watching this on my Mac, but can only see video; can't hear any audio. Doing a Show Movie Info in Quicktime Player says the audio codec is "Unknown". What codec are you using? I'd sure like to experience the whole thing...Animation looks neat though.

Hope to see the Quicktime version soon! ;) or even a DivX with different audio codec used.

I have a question for you...
I currently attend The Art Institute and when I get out I plan on leaving to Flordia to attend Ringling...If you have a second, would you mind sharing your expieriences there? Do you think it was worth the time, money and effort? and do they offer master degrees in animation?
Thank you...

Definitely one of the most memorable student films that graced CGTalk! Vancouver Film School and the German Film School has a new competitor ;) Students are definetly getting it right from the get go these days. Congrats

I'll be also plugging this on www.3dfestival.com as I did Thelvin's great job again.

You have received the CGtalk choice award .Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Stunning work.

upon receiving this award, it guarantees you a spot in the cgtalk gallery hall of fame (http://gallery.cgtalk.com) - which you are now placed

HUMAN BEHAVIOUR

You nail it. Deep.

Goodjob Patrick:thumbsup: A work welldone.
Although I find the modeling, acting in some part (i.e: the headless man entrance) & cuts could be improved -imo they are a bit weak compared to the brilliant story- all in all this is such a fine short. And when I read the credit hats off to ya for the music too.

Now I go browse your site expecting for some moody stuffs...

There's a WIP quicktime movie on his site, tho small and unfinished it gives you the the idea of the short. I actually liked the music a bit more in that version, and also some stuff that was changed or left out :)

It really got to me. With something like this I'm not to worried about how it looks at all... the story is what matters most. You did both very well :-) Icing on the cake, dude.
great job

haha ouch.... At first I was like what a guy, he's actually returning the head despite his being a monster but then he's even more agressive then the other guy. Interesting story.

The animation style was intresting and the lightning was quite overexagerated, realistic in some ways and dramatic all in one, i liked that. I love the use of sun light (fake or not) when it's exagerated.

The modeling is cartoony but I get used to it ;) Not my thing, i prefer more realistic modeling, the only time i like cartoony is when its animesque but i doubt that would fit this story, anywho really cool.

The music is absolutely amazing, i love it, i love the combination of the instruments, definetely my style, i think it's really really good, reminds me a bit of trigun too (jap anime that i quite like).

PS - would you give me an mp3 of the song ;_; I really love that style of music. Kudos on the video!!

There's some rigging problems at the start of your animation right where you introduce the second character. You should probably render that part over and double check the rest. Looks like the guy who lost his head also lost his biceps when he bends over. Rigging is important

Animation looks good tho and I like the camera moves.

I went to a short film festival last night and saw ninety minutes of nothing that even touches this in terms of emotional movement and professional execution. Bravo.

I would suggest, however, including a moment directly before the car hit, where perhaps he shifts from narcisim to public pride... almost declairing in his look that "look at my lovely face... Im going to wear this and have a great future!" and it is that that takes his mind off crossing the road. A low angle would show how big he feels, slow motion to make it an inner moment (and that would make the car hit funnier) and perhaps choosing a brighter backlight for that shot.

You already have a moment of narcisim, so it would be perhaps another glimps at his inner character before he eats bonnet.

Again, Bravo.

That's a fantastic job you've done there :applause:
I like the tragic story. It's like a mirror of reality... it reflects the desire for beauty, however no matter if beauty comes from the inside, everyone wants to be good looking!!

Cheers for an excellent animation

Thanks to everyone for all the kind comments.

Vagrant(and all of the others who asked about the school): Ringling is in Sarasota, an hour south of tampa... It has an undergraduate BFA program in Computer animation that stresses good story and character animation. Check out conceptart.org It has a forum with a schools discussion section containing a great thread about ringling's pro's and cons... I've loved the program, I think Its well worth it if you are truly dedicated to what you do... not everyone feels the same though...

King of Daveness: That is a great idea, I wish someone would have mentioned it 8 months ago:shrug: (about the public pride just before the impact) thanks for the kind words.

AVT: Rigging is not my thing, I'm not much of a tech person more concerned with the impact and feel of a piece beyond anything. the weighting was quick, and yes it could have been better, but time was tight and I'd rather get the performance down first and the lighting second... and then deadlines come and now it is what it is. thanks for the comments :)

theta: thanks, thats the important part

lildragon: Thank you very much, I very much appretiate the recognition.

"That's really weird!" I thought at first...but then I went back and downloaded the small version (I only dl'ed the large one before), and the same was true for me on the small one. So we were looking at 2 different versions; looks like they're each encoded a bit differently? So I extracted the soundtrack from the small one and replaced it into the large one and get the whole experience. :)

Really great and original story, and expressed very well thru the animation, timing, cuts, facial expressions as well as the music of course.

You can probably tell through his thesis, but Pat's always been one of those guys since 2nd year where you're like "holy s#@$"...his stuff always looked great. Outside of the computer cave he is also a good painter, I am not sure if he has his paintings up in his site, but I am in his painting class and he is just a well rounded artist that can apply his knowledge to everything.

He's got a fantastic job already in line. Well deserved! Congrats, good luck to him!!

Yes this is special right here, i agree with everyone here it's a great short which makes me wanna watch it over again. My only crit would be on the animation side of things, on some shots it's very very good but on some others i just think it's gone a bit too far, like where he looks at himself on the window reflection and his hands come up, and the way they come up i find is so ennoying they look like rubber, these are very very little things but they stay in ones mind sometimes...

the shot with the guy looking for his head on the floor is fantastic, i really enjoyed watcjing that...

Excellent stuff..

hello everyone :)

Mask: I'm not sure what you mean by how much did it take me? Money? Time... well concept for it started january 2002, production august 2003, and I took december off... I did it completely on Ringling's equipment... so the cost was tuition I suppose but I also got a bfa:rolleyes:

Joss: all titling and compositing was done in shake

Cwang: thanks alex :) appretiate the comments

School is making me clear off my homespace so I have to take the large version down... sorry guys
the web page is almost entirely gone as well.

Have a good one everyone

nice animation but this story has been done. Ive seen an animation with a guy with no head that was wearing a bag in the beggining. He gets a baloon head and in the end gets a real head.
