View Full Version : Story based FXWars Discussion Thread (Watch video on thread, then discuss)
RobertoOrtiz 01-15-2008, 01:10 AM As some of you know I want to move the forum to do more story based challenges..
I recently found this thread that confirmed that this is a good direction to go.
Check this video, and come back here to discuss its implications:

Hi, I think this is a good direction to be going to. But I hope that video footages can be provided as some of us might have difficulty getting access to filming our own footage. Unless we do all cg, then it is a different story.

I will provide the footage...
Here are some tests I recorded:

yeah this is what i wanted to see in fxwars. live action + CG
Currently i am working on one fx shot in which hero(actor) is running in the street and i filmed the footage. I am showing in the shot that character is running away and road destruction/explosion is happening behind him. but there are many FX shots possible. like actor is running away from dinosaur or from fires or one car chasing him. lots of possibilities. I want to see something like this. You(or anyone) provide footage and we are free to make fx on using footage. What do you guys think?
Here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=153&t=582112) is the wip of my fx shot.

Ok then lets plan a bit more...
How do you guys feel about composite work.
Most of our challengers tend to avoid it, so I wonder what could be done to encourage it more.
Promote free tools?
Offer raw video? (something that is already on the table)
And what kind of stories would you like to participate in?
Looking forward to your ideas..

Agreed ragecg, I think that clip is open to a lot of freedom and posibilities. As for compositing as it is very much a big part of FX, I think it should be acceptable. This is also a good learning curve for people to see how compositing fits so well in an effects pipeline. Im not a compositior but its an area I want to study in, so I have joined FXPHD's Fusion course this term.
Free tools?
Yeah totally. You could go end to end with this purley in open source materials, but also there are the free learning edition industry tools too.
Open source...
Voodoo Camera Tracker (http://www.digilab.uni-hannover.de/download.html)
Jahshaka Realtime Editing And Effects (http://jahshaka.org/News/p2_articleid/76)
Gimp Image Editing Software (http://www.gimp.org/)
Blender 3D Package
(http://www.blender.org/)
As for stories, put a multiple choice vote in for a background story, everyone votes, then over the weeks/months when a new challenge is on the cards, make it like a "next" scene from a film...
E.g: 1st comp; Create the preperation to the Omaha beach landing.
2nd comp; Create the airborne assault prequel to omaha landings,
3rd comp; Create the landings themself.......
So maybe 4-5 challenges down the road, you have in effect created a short, maybe if those were comped together for a bonus round to create a short film.
Just thinking out loud here......

Great ideas...
We will do this..
But first I have to make sure that the health of the forum is
100% before I take a chance.
The next challenge will be traditional but boy...it will be a TON of fun.
I might even add some live action elements if I have the time...
That third clip will be the FOUNDATION of a complete mini challenge.
More on that one soon.

The story direction is great IMO.
Challenges mainly reside in scope of materials and disciplines needed to complete such efforts. Software probably isn't the biggest obsticle.
My guess is that most people that populate the board have at least one or two core tools on hand. Trick might be to help enable team building ... or even team sharing ... or perhaps war asset building?
One "battle" of the war might be a matchmove challenge ... match the shot, build out the rough cg scene ... render animation and provide results in some predefined list of formats.
Another battle might be to model a ship or two for the sea ... another to model & rig some characters ..... by the end of the year there's a boatload (pun intended) of assets ready to go for interested FXWarriors to tap into to build out an epic scene.
Well .... just a thought.

OK we will do something we NEVER have done for the next FXwars challenge..
We will do a preproduction period.
I will post a master thread BEFORE the challenge so people can discuss ideas
on HOW to do the VFX.

I was thinking of using the HCR modeling challenge to build assets.

Having this public preproduction period may run the risk folks final shots possibly looking similar in concept, but I think doing it that way may make things tighter, and more competitive in the end, so it sounds good to me:)

Good points...
I will be filming some FX plates on the snow covered mountains in Virginia this weekend..
And on Sunday I might shoot some plates around the DC area.
