Hello all, I'm new here, and i'm trying to figure out this problem i'm having with lighting a bridge i've been working on.

It was suggested by someone that I do an ambient occlusion pass, using a dome with its ambient color ramped up to white and its primary visibilty turned off. Apparently, this will give me good shadows and highlights and will bring out the form of the objects, but the dome isn't giving me any effect. It still looks like the default mental ray lighting. I don't know if I'm forgetting to mess with some settings, but I'm stumped. I'm using raytraced shadows in mental ray, and also don't know if I should use final gather or not.

If someone could help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

~Thanks!

No, I wasn't aware that I should do this. How would I go about it?

No, I was not aware that I would have to use a specific shader.

How would I go about this?

in your mental ray shaders ther is one call ambient occlusion. apply directly or to a mental ray shader network through a suface shader.

Also, Ryan, you can use the ambient occlusion preset in the maya render layer by putting all the objects that you want to render with ao into a single render layer and then just right click over the layer and choose the ao preset. This automatically adds the shader to that layer and sets the other necessary render settings as well. For further details, please refer to the maya or mental ray help docs.
Hope this helps and post any problems you face further ahead.
