View Full Version : MOrphing a car into a plane
ssyed 04-25-2003, 11:30 PM Hi, i'm age 14 looking for some help, i am trying to learn some new animation techniques, for a competition in animation for highschoolers (FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION), u can see this years our entry fairly rudimentry: http://www.travisusd.k12.ca.us/vanden/clubs/robotics
skip intro and at the bottom theres a link, it was done in max.
what i need 2 know is how to morph a model in to another , perhaps with same number face / vertex perhaps not, all i have i 3dsmax 5, 3.1, SOftimage EXP, Maya PLE, Houdini Ed. so what should i use and how 2 do it .
Would making a low poly mesh then hand animating each vertex 2 another mesh work, then swap in the high poly? that seems very hard 2 do
any help thanks

ssyed,
maybe you shold look into a 2D morph application, I used one called Elastic Reality, very long time ago, dont think it exist anymore, or similar(search www, might be some free one that could do it), don't think there is any 3d package that morphs between different vertex counts with predictable results, I might be wrong. If you have Max there is a mod called spherify I think, which you might use as a "target" between the two objects, might be worth a try,
Cheers,

Thanks but i figured out a better method : (for people not knowin)
What u do is creat a box w/ say 10,10,10 segments, then u make it to the exact top side and front views of the first mesh after melting it a little (w/ melt modifier) i also morphed the texture 2 a chrome raytracer and then simply animate the FFD which i found quite simple for parts that are very defined (like wings on a plane) just scale those down and enlarge them back 2 size during morph it works better if u use chrome for the morph mesh because it looks cool and hides the ugliness

just out of curiosity, would anyone happen to know of any free morph applications, or maybe a plugin for premeire?

I posted something a while ago about a free 'spline based' 2d morphing program. I posted it in the After FX forum I think.... you are welcome to search for it, I have forgotten the name of the program.
